Yesterday, I explained why using enough sunscreen matters. Today, let’s make it practical.
One of the biggest surprises for my clients is how much sunscreen Health Canada recommends for the face and neck: 1 teaspoon (5 mL).
Most people use much less.
Sunscreens are tested using a specific amount. If you apply significantly less, you may not receive the level of protection printed on the label.
That’s why choosing an SPF 50 sunscreen doesn’t automatically mean you’re getting SPF 50 protection.
What about foundation or moisturizer with SPF?
They can be a great addition to your routine, but most people don’t apply enough product to achieve the SPF listed on the label. I recommend thinking of them as an extra layer of protection—not a replacement for a dedicated sunscreen.
And spray sunscreen?
It can be effective if you apply enough and distribute it evenly. I often recommend sprays for reapplication, but I still prefer a lotion or cream as the base layer because it’s easier to ensure adequate coverage.
Finally, here’s a simple reality check:
If you’re using a 4 oz (118 mL) sunscreen every day on your face and neck, it should typically be finished in about 3–4 weeks. If it lasts for several months, you may not be applying enough.
Remember, the best sunscreen is:
✔ Broad-spectrum
✔ SPF 30–50+
✔ Applied generously
✔ Reapplied according to the directions
Small changes in how you use sunscreen can make a meaningful difference in protecting your skin.
