🌿 Pruning: what do we need to let go of?

I’ve been thinking about pruning lately.

In nature, pruning can look a little harsh. Cutting back branches. Removing what once grew. Letting go of parts that may still look perfectly fine.

But the purpose isn’t to take away.

It’s to make room for healthier growth. 🌱

And I wonder where we might need a little pruning in our own lives.

Maybe it’s:

- a commitment that no longer feels aligned
- a habit we’ve outgrown
- an expectation we keep putting on ourselves
- clutter (physical, mental, or emotional)
- a goal that made sense for an earlier version of us
- the need to keep doing something simply because we’ve always done it

Not to strip everything back. Just to notice what’s taking energy without giving much back.

There’s something freeing about remembering that letting go can be part of growing.
We don’t have to carry every branch into the next season. 🌿

What could you prune right now to make a little more room for what wants to grow?

Try this stir-fried broccoli with coconut for a tasty dose of magnesium. Often referred to as ‘the calming mineral’, magnesium nourishes the nervous system and supports the action of brain chemicals which play an important role in sleep and relaxation. Involved in over 300 reactions throughout the body, it also assists energy creation, bone health and the immune system.

Recipe: Stir-fried Broccoli and Coconut
Thank you 'GoodFood' for the recipe!

Ingredients:
- 6 tbsp vegetable oil
- 3 ½ tsp mustard seed
- 3 tbsp fresh or dried curry leaf
- a pinch chilli flakes
- 4 red onions, thickly sliced
- 100g ginger, shredded
- 800g think-stemmed broccoli, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 4oz fresh or frozen grated coconut
- juice 2 limes

STEP 1️⃣
Heat the oil in a large wok or saucepan set over a medium heat. Toss in the mustard seeds followed by the curry leaves (if you are using dried curry leaves add them later on with the broccoli) and chilli flakes. Swirl everything around until the leaves stop spluttering, then add the onions and ginger and fry for 3-4 mins over a high heat.

STEP 2️⃣
Stir in the broccoli (and dried curry leaves if using) and continue frying over a high heat until just tender, stirring all the time. Scatter over the coconut, stir to mix and sharpen with the lime juice.

*I would likely add some protein to this stirfry as well 😀

What makes me feel alive at work is the moment when a patient starts to connect the dots.

It’s when someone begins to understand their labs, their symptoms, and why they may be feeling the way they do. But, the dots are not only about numbers on a page. They are about seeing the bigger picture — how our physical health, mental health, emotional wellbeing, lifestyle, and life experiences all influence each other.

I love watching that moment when someone realizes there is a reason their body is responding the way it is. When confusion starts to turn into clarity, and frustration starts to turn into hope.

The plan we create together is important, but I believe the process itself is healing. Being heard, being understood, and having someone take the time to look at the whole picture can restore a sense of empowerment.

One of my favourite moments is watching a patient leave a little lighter than when they arrived. They stand a little taller because they finally understand what is happening and have an achievable path forward.

That moment — when someone realizes they are not broken, they are not powerless, and there are things they can do to support their health — is what continues to inspire me after all these years in practice.

🌱 Soil before seeds: building foundations before chasing fixes 🌱

If you plant the best seeds in depleted soil, they may struggle to grow.
You can add fertilizer.
You can water more.
You can buy better seeds.
But sometimes, the problem isn't the seed, it's the soil.

✨I think about health in much the same way✨

We're often tempted to search for the next thing...the supplement, the protocol, the diet, the treatment, the newest health trend. And sometimes those things can be helpful.

But before adding more, it's worth asking:
✨What is the foundation we're adding it to?✨

Are you sleeping enough?
Are you eating enough nourishing, whole foods?
Are you moving your body regularly?
Is your digestive system functioning well?
Are you getting time outside and connecting with people you care about?
Does your nervous system ever get a chance to come out of "go mode"?

These things may not feel as exciting as the newest wellness trend, but they create the environment in which our bodies function. Just like healthy soil supports a garden, our daily habits help create the terrain that supports our health.

This doesn't mean we need to do everything perfectly and healthy soil isn't created overnight, either.

So before asking: "What else should I add?"
Try asking: "What does my foundation need?"

Maybe it's an earlier bedtime.
A nourishing breakfast.
A walk after dinner.
More fibre and variety on your plate.
Five quiet minutes before the day begins.

Start with the soil. Then plant the seeds. 🌱

We are all addicted to this salad! It's one of my favourite these days because it tastes good, fills me up, it's quick & easy to make, and the kids like it too!

🥗 Kale (or a mixed kale salad), preferably massaged with olive oil ahead of time!
🥗 Goat cheese or feta (optional if you are dairy free)
🥗 Chicken or Turkey
🥗 Red onion, chopped small
🥗 Pomegranate seeds
🥗 Pumpkin seeds

I top with a dressing made of apple cider vinegar, olive oil (lots) and Herbamare - shake, pour over and toss.

My kids like this as a lunch (less kale or they choose parsley), mixed in with quinoa or millet. They love it!

Q: What inspired you to become a naturopathic doctor (not the story you tell patients, the real story)?
The honest answer is that I didn’t grow up wanting to become a naturopathic doctor. I actually always wanted to be a medical doctor. I was fascinated by science, the human body, and the idea of helping people through some of their most vulnerable moments.

In fact, I had never even heard of naturopathic medicine until the last year of my undergraduate degree.

At that time, my dad had a heart attack and my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer. Watching two people I loved navigate their health challenges made me start asking different questions. I saw how important medical care was, but I also saw how much people needed beyond a diagnosis or a prescription. They needed education, support, and someone who had the time to really listen.

I realized I didn’t want a career where I only had a few minutes with someone and never got to understand the bigger picture of their health. I wanted to know their story, their lifestyle, their challenges, and help them see the tools they had available to them.

That is what drew me to naturopathic medicine. I wanted to practice in a way that made patients active participants in their healthcare—not passive recipients of advice. Twenty years later, that remains the part of this profession that matters most to me.

Would love for you to come see me!
