📢 Update for Ontario Chiropodists & Podiatrists
The OSC has released a concise, evidence‑based update to help the profession navigate next steps with clarity. Our summary draws on the key documents shaping government decision‑making, including the HPRAC report and the Ministry of Health’s recent correspondence on the status of podiatry in Ontario.

We know many practitioners are looking for clear information about the path forward. This update outlines the Ministry’s stated position, the RHPA framework, and how modernization can align with system priorities such as fiscal sustainability, patient access, and workforce logic.

📅 OSC Town Hall Announcement To support open dialogue and answer questions directly, the OSC will be hosting a member town hall.

Please join us Sunday, June 14th at 4pm.

We hope you’ll join us for a constructive, forward‑looking conversation grounded in evidence, professionalism, and our shared commitment to the patients we serve.

🗣️Update to the Profession: COCOO Council Meeting – May 21, 2026

At its May 21 meeting, COCOO Council removed the Supervising Chiropody Students Standard from the decision agenda. No rationale was provided. A public Council member requested it return for decision in October, though this is not confirmed.

All other standards and guidelines were approved and are now in effect, including the revised Patient Relations Practice Standard.

A full breakdown of the updates, including key changes to boundaries, virtual care, reporting requirements, and practice expectations, has been sent to members by email. Please check your inbox for the full summary.

This is a critical time for our profession, and staying informed ensures we can respond to regulatory changes with clarity and confidence.

The Society — in step with Ontario

Movement is part of every stage of life. Whether you are running errands, dancing in the living room, playing sports, exploring nature, travelling, picking apples in the fall, splashing at the beach, or sharing joyful moments in clinic.

Healthy feet make all of it possible.

As we close out Foot Health Month, Week Four invites Ontarians and our members to celebrate the simple act of walking — and the foot health care that keeps people moving with confidence.

Chiropodists and podiatrists support balance, mobility, injury prevention, and healthy aging. When we protect foot health, we protect independence, connection, and community.

Walk With Us, Ontario.
Because every step matters.

🦶 Week Three: Foot Health Month: 🦶
⏱️Take 30 Seconds for Your Feet ⏱️

This week, we are launching the 30‑Second Foot Check Campaign: a micro‑campaign teaching Ontarians a quick self‑screen they can do at home.

We’re inviting you to help the public learn one simple habit: a 30‑second foot check. Small checks can prevent complications, support early detection, and reduce strain on the health system.

Your posts help Ontarians see that prevention starts with awareness (and that chiropodists and podiatrists are leaders in mobility preservation).

How You Can Participate 🤳

Record a short video or take a photo demonstrating one simple foot check. Choose any topic: skin, nails, temperature, sensation, heels, shape/swelling, wounds, or colour. Check your email for more post ideas!

Post it on your preferred platform.

Example Script (Kids’ Foot Check)
“Take 30 seconds to check your child’s feet.
Look for redness, rashes, peeling skin, blisters, or changes in their toenails.
If something seems off, a chiropodist can help.
Healthy feet help kids stay active. ”

Together, we can amplify a clear, consistent message across Ontario: A 30‑second foot check can prevent complications and keep people moving.

🚨 URGENT ALERT: THE FUTURE OF OUR PROFESSION IS ON THE LINE 🚨

On Thursday, May 21st, the College Council will vote on a new "Supervising Chiropody Students Standard" (Item 3.8 )

While we all support safe student mentorship, the OSC and the Michener Institute (UHN) (the only school for our profession in Ontario) are in opposition to this proposal.

What’s at risk?

•A 50% Drop in Placements: UHN and OSC warn that a mandatory 1:1 student ratio and a 3-year practice minimum will choke our training pipeline, making it harder for students to graduate and for you to mentor them.

•Regulatory Overreach: Clinical education is already governed by robust agreements between the school and clinical sites. This standard adds redundant paperwork that serves no demonstrated safety gap.

•Ignoring the Facts: The College claims stakeholder feedback was "inaccurate," but our research proves COCOO is a significant outlier.

o Occupational Therapists only require 1 year of experience to supervise.
o Pharmacists rely on professional judgment, not rigid ratios.
o Dentists use non-binding guidelines, not restrictive standards.

The Bottom Line: The College is using a single 2025 disciplinary case to impose a system-wide burden on every practitioner in the province. We question the application of the "Right-Touch Regulation" approach that risk destabilizing our workforce supply at a time when Ontario needs us most.

WE ARE TAKING ACTION: The OSC has sent a formal letter to the College Executive requesting they withdraw this standard. We have also repeated our call for a transparent governance process that aligns with the Ministry of Health's priorities for balanced workforce planning.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Stay informed and engaged!

1. Read the Items for Decision: Review the COCOO Council Meeting Materials below and check your email for more information from your OSC.

2. Observe the in-person Meeting: The May 21st Council meeting is open to the public. You must contact the College to RSVP your attendance at: [email protected]

3. Prepare for the Town Hall: Be informed and prepare evidence-based questions for the COCOO June 2nd College Town Hall. RSVP invitations were sent to your email back in March.

OSC Update: Ministry Announcement on Scope of Practice

On May 11, the Ministry of Health announced new scope‑of‑practice expansions for several regulated health professions as part of Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care. These changes aim to improve access, reduce wait times, and strengthen system capacity.

The Ministry also issued letters regarding chiropody and podiatry, confirming that the proposed diagnostic imaging expansion for chiropodists will not proceed at this time and that the current model will remain in place while system‑wide priorities are reviewed.

This decision does not reflect on the competencies of practitioners in Ontario. Chiropodists and podiatrists, whether trained in Ontario or other jurisdictions, continue to deliver safe, high‑quality foot health care. Other provinces have modernized their frameworks to reflect these competencies; Ontario’s framework has not yet caught up.

The OSC will continue to work collaboratively with the Ministry, the College, and all system partners on matters affecting the profession.

In addition, the OSC is developing the Ontario Podiatric Competency Framework (OPCF) as a professional, competency‑based resource to support long‑term modernization and we look forward to sharing more as this work progresses.

If you are not currently an OSC member, we welcome you to stay connected with us as we navigate this evolving landscape together.

It’s Week 2 of Foot Health Month!

This week we are sharing the Ontario Foot Health Report Card, highlighting how common foot pain is, its impact on daily life, and when to seek out foot health clinicians (chiropodists and podiatrists).

Foot problems are widespread, but many can be prevented with early assessment and treatment. The Report Card outlines:

• Foot pain prevalence
• Preventable complications
• Barriers that delay care
• When to see a chiropodist or podiatrist

We are proud to support the Feet First Ontario campaign and help raise awareness about the importance of foot health and timely access to care.
