I don't usually get overly emotional when a celebrity dies but this one is tough. In this divisive world she was a unifying figure.

I've always liked Dolly, as most people do, but became obsessed after listening to the podcast series "Dolly Parton's America". After listening to that series, when in a confrontational situation, I would legitimately ask myself "What would Dolly do?".

We should all channel our inner Dolly to keep her spirit alive.

My sister, renowned photographer Sarah Parent | Photographer, came to visit from Indiana a couple weeks ago. She specializes in senior pictures which is more of a thing in the US than here. That's not pictures of senior citizens, but high school seniors. I guess we do grad pictures at the end of the year, but these are done near the beginning of the school year in lieu of (or conjunction with) school portraits. She took the opportunity with blooming sunflowers to capture our Sweet Caroline before her last year of high school.

I have a confession to make... Earth and Hide is, and has always been run by an A.I. (average individual), "Chuck GPT".

Unlike artificial intelligence, it can take a month or more for me to answer an email and I consume just a single glass of water a day. But like modern AI, you can never be 100% sure if what I'm saying is correct.

I had a guy approach the booth at the Toronto market and ask if I had considered using AI in my work. I accidentally laughed in his face. I replied "Do you have an AI agent that can cut leather and sew up a bag for me? Maybe one that will set up and staff the booth?" He realized how ridiculous it sounded to me and clarified that it would help with the administrative aspect.

In all seriousness, I'm not above using AI in general, but I want you to know that everything I present will be created by me or another actual human. I try not to even repost content created by AI. I feel like if you have the respect for me to offer your attention, I should honor that with personal effort and my genuine thoughts and talents.

I got to throw out the first pitch at the Winnipeg Goldeyes game last night in my capacity as Kris Kringle for Christmas in July!!

So there I am, slinging my leather goods in the handmade village at Winnipeg Folk Festival and this duo comes to check things out. I had already met folks from out of town so I like asking people where they're from. These guys said "Virginia" "Oh really? What part?" "Harrisonburg." "No freaking way! My wife was born and raised there!! Her parents still live there!!!” Turns out they are performers Illiterate Light. Instant connection. Honestly I would have vibed with them no matter where they're from. They are some of the best people on the planet.

I never really go check out any of the music when I'm setup at Folk Fest; I always feel like I need to be in the booth and I'm so beat at the end of the day. But timing worked to check out their performance and I'm glad I did. What a high energy set! Honestly it's not the first music I would reach for now but I would have been really into it in my twenties. Watching them reminded me that guy is still in there!

We got to say hi after the show and got to make connections with mutual Shenandoah Valley friends. They ended up inviting us backstage! The bartender made us a drink and we got to feel like a bit of a celebrity for a minute. What a special feeling that was. I really hope everyone can experience that feeling.
