August 1st is Emancipation Day. Today acknowledges Canada’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the end of slavery across the British Empire when the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect on August 1st, 1834. We also acknowledge the legacy of anti-Black racism left by slavery that continues to persist, and that Emancipation Day cannot be celebrated without recognizing these ongoing realities.

WHAI is committed to continuing to learn about and work to address the ongoing impacts of Canada's historic and on-going anti-Black racism and how these lead to the disproportionate impact of HIV and adverse health outcomes for Black communities, particularly for Black women and gender-diverse people. In our work, WHAI will continue to strengthen our work to rupture systems that uphold and perpetuate white supremacy and to be active and intentional co-conspirators in the fight against anti-Black racism.

Women and HIV / AIDS Initiative (WHAI) builds community capacity to support women and gender-diverse people living with or facing systemic risk of contracting HIV. ACNBA hosts a local WHAI Coordinator.

This World Hepatitis Day, let’s break down the barriers holding us back from a hepatitis-free world.
Our goals:

· Everyone has the knowledge and understanding they need to make informed choices about hepatitis testing, treatment and vaccination.

· Decision makers become advocates, providing the resources needed to improve the lives of communities affected by hepatitis.

· End hepatitis stigma and ensure no one is left behind.

· Everyone agrees that hepatitis elimination is not only possible but achievable – if we all work together to make it happen.

Did you know that we have a whole hep C team here at The AIDS Committee ready to help you? You don't need to go through it alone. We have a Nurse Practitioner, 2 Registered Nurses, A Counsellor, an Outreach Worker and a Community Development Worker.

The Ontario Hepatitis C Teams were created by the Ministry of Health to support marginalized populations in Ontario who have or are at risk for hepatitis C. The multidisciplinary teams provide wrap around care.

Hepatitis isn't typically the first thing on most people's minds. Many people even get Hepatitis A, B and C confused. so, let's break it down!

Hep C is a blood borne virus, curable but has no vaccine.

Hep A is spread through contaminated food/water, no antiviral cure is needed as it usually resolves on its own. There is a vaccine.

Hep B is transmitted through blood, semen and vaginal fluid. Infection can be short term or life long. It is treatable, but not curable. There is a vaccine.
