We can’t protect our kids from every message they hear from someone else, but we can let them hear us set boundaries on what is appropriate and not appropriate for our family.

We are entering in the holiday season when comments tend to fly….so hopefully this can give you some ideas on how to combat food & body talk.

Worried about your picky eater’s protein intake?!

Rest assured that MOST kids are actually meeting their needs even it doesn’t seem like it!

So how much protein do kids need?

🍳Toddlers from 1 to 3 years: 13 grams per day
🥛 Kids 4-9: 19 grams per day
🫘 Kids 9-13: 34 grams per day

So let’s put this into perspective if your kid drinks 1 cup of milk that’s already 7 grams of protein, 1 slice of whole grain bread has 4-5 grams, 1 tbsp peanut butter has 4 grams, 1/2 cup plain pasta has 4-5 grams, 1 chicken strip has 7 grams of protein.

As you can see, it doesn’t take much to meet requirements for protein so I hope this helps decrease your STRESS around protein.

Parenthood is hard enough so let me take something OFF your worry list ❤️

📌SAVE THIS POST to remind you of the protein needs for each age group!

You are the original INFLUENCER

Parents have a more power to influence a child’s relationship with food and their bodies than any other factors.

More than social media. More than what they see on TV. Or even what they learn at school.

You are the ultimate teacher.

What do you want them to learn about food? How do you want them to feel when they eat broccoli? When they eat cake?

Teach them core beliefs. Food doesn’t influence their value as a person. Their worth is not tied to their body size. They will always be loved regardless of what they eat/don’t eat or what their body looks like. This is our gift to them this holiday season 💕

How is diet culture translated to kids?

This is how. Through media, TV, books, worksheets, toys, etc. It starts young and it starts often.

I’m working on a presentation for parents of preschoolers to explain how diet culture is already affecting their little ones. Keep your eye out for these things and help kids realize what the messaging is, saying and how it affects how we feel about our food & bodies and the food choices & bodies of others.

Someone asked me tonight “why the school lunch program offers ‘junk’ food like chips and cookies?!”

And I actually had a LOT of thoughts on this and why I was actually (shockingly for them) in favour of it.

Let me know what you think of my list and if any of them resonate with you?

↗️ Feel free to share this message to help others learn a little bit more about the complexity of feeding kids!

My heart is broken with all of the violence against women.

All I can hope is that I raise my son to believe women. To stand up for women. To call out those who wish to do women harm. To report men who hurt others.

Boy moms how are you doing out there?

OK, all jokes aside! I think we’re all tired these days.

But what might not be helping is if your ferritin levels (which are the storage form of iron) are low!

What’s crazy is that they’re not flagged until they are VERY low. Meaning that often no one tells you that you could actually feel better.

My last ferritin was 29 (in the “probable iron deficiency range”) and was told “your labs look good”.

For adults 18 years old and above:
Ferritin levels in ug/L
Under 15: diagnostic of iron deficiency
15-30: probable iron deficiency
>30: iron deficiency unlikely
>100: normal iron stores

So if you’re under 100 ug/L you are below normal but usually no one says anything. Also note that most men I see have ferritin levels over 200!! Can you imagine all we could accomplish with levels that high!

📌So save this post! Remember, there’s a difference between deficiency and sufficiency and optimal levels. Send this to someone who is tired too!

What’s the first sign of perimenopause?

For most women I work with it’s “I just just don’t feel like myself”. Which is so common, in fact, it actually has an acronym IJDFLM.

Other common signs include:
🩸Cycles that become shorter (or fluctuate in length)
🤬Mood swings that come out of nowhere
🤕Headaches & migraines
🛌 Sleep that suddenly feels unpredictable
🧠Brain fog
🪮Hair loss & thinning
Oh and low libido 🙅‍♀️

But despite struggling with some of this myself, no one was taking me seriously! Because I am “only” in my early 40’s. And told “you’re too young to be in perimenopause.” 🤦‍♀️

📌SAVE this post to remind you of key changes that signal perimenopause

What other signs or symptoms were present when you started to realize you were in perimenopause?
