Depression during perimenopause can affect every aspect of your life.

For many women, this stage of life comes when the demands of work, family, and caregiving are already high, making it even more challenging to cope with mood changes.

Depression can present as a combination of symptoms, including:

• Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed
• Changes in appetite or weight
• Sleep disturbances
• Fatigue or loss of energy
• Changes in attention, concentration, or memory
• Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
• Suicidal thoughts

Women who experience depression during perimenopause may be at a higher risk of developing chronic depression later in life, which is why seeking support early is so important.

If you’ve noticed persistent changes in your mood during perimenopause, don’t dismiss them as something you simply have to push through. Book an appointment with me for a comprehensive assessment so we can better understand what’s contributing to your symptoms and discuss treatment options that are right for you. 🌿

Did you know that depression is incredibly common during perimenopause?

One study found that the risk of depression in the 2 years prior to menopause is 14 times higher compared to the 31 years prior. For some women, this stage is considered a “”window of vulnerability”” due to increased sensitivity to hormone fluctuations.

Some of the factors that may contribute to depression during perimenopause include:

💚 Declining estrogen
Estrogen plays an important role in brain function and mood. It helps regulate neurotransmitters that enhance mood and stimulates BDNF, an important neuroprotective factor. It’s thought that the fluctuation and decline of estrogen during perimenopause may trigger depressive symptoms in some women.

💚 A history of depression or PMDD
Women with a history of depression are at a higher risk of experiencing a relapse during perimenopause. Similarly, women with a history of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) are also at increased risk. This is one reason why a thorough health and hormone assessment in early perimenopause can be so valuable.

💚 Significant life stress
Midlife often comes with major life stressors, whether related to health, work, divorce or loss, or caring for children or aging parents. Research also shows that women with a history of childhood trauma may be at increased risk of depression during this stage of life.

💚 Perimenopause symptoms
More significant hot flashes and night sweats have been associated with a higher risk of depression. Other symptoms, including sleep disturbances and worsening PMS symptoms, can also contribute to feelings of sadness, irritability, or depression.

If you’ve noticed changes in your mood during perimenopause, you don’t have to navigate them alone. Book an appointment with me to discuss your symptoms, assess your hormone health, and create a personalized plan to support you through this transition. 🌿

Last week, I shared how to calculate your menstrual blood loss. 🩸

If you discovered you’re losing more than 80 mL of blood per period, the next step is understanding the root cause.

Heavy periods can significantly impact quality of life, but they can also be an important clue that something may be going on beneath the surface. The right testing can help identify contributing factors and guide treatment decisions.

When investigating heavy menstrual bleeding, I commonly recommend a Complete Blood Count (CBC), ferritin, and TSH. Depending on your symptoms and history, additional testing such as hormone testing, coagulation studies, or a pelvic ultrasound may also be appropriate.

One thing I can’t emphasize enough: test your iron levels. Heavy periods commonly lead to iron deficiency, and addressing it is an important part of helping you feel your best.

If you’ve calculated your blood loss and suspect your periods are heavier than they should be, book an appointment with me to explore the root cause and discuss what testing may be appropriate for you. 💚

💭 What is a normal vs. heavy period flow?

It’s normal and healthy for a period to last anywhere from 2 to 7 days, with blood loss of 30-80mL, or 2-6 Tbsp in total (I’ll elaborate on how to calculate this for yourself shortly).

A “heavy menstrual flow” is defined as any volume of flow that interferes with your social life, work life, emotional well-being, or quality of life. If YOU feel your period is heavy and that you’re having to “manage” it by staying home more often, using a LOT of menstrual products, or sticking near the bathroom, it’s worth getting it checked out by your doctor.

But… how can I tell how much blood I’m losing??

Still not sure if your period is *actually* heavy, or if you’re just “used to it”? I’ll elaborate further.

For research purposes, a heavy menstrual flow is defined as anything over 80 mL of blood lost PER PERIOD.

Stay tuned, as I’ll be sharing a quick calculation to figure out how much you’re losing. 🩸

If your acne keeps cycling back… there’s usually more going on beneath the surface.

One of the most overlooked pieces? Your blood sugar and insulin. ⚖️

When insulin levels are higher than they should be, it can directly contribute to breakouts, especially alongside hormonal patterns like PCOS.

That’s why I often look at other factors, such as:
✔️ Fasting glucose and insulin
✔️ HbA1c (another blood sugar marker)
✔️ Cholesterol

Because acne isn’t just about your skin, it’s about what’s happening internally.

And here’s something most people don’t realize…

Testing estrogen and progesterone doesn’t always give us clear answers. These hormones fluctuate constantly, so a single test is just a snapshot. 📈📉

Instead, your breakout pattern and timing often tell us much more. This is why your history matters so much.

Taking a careful health and hormone history, along with targeted testing (when needed), helps us clearly understand the root cause of your acne and which treatments will actually work to balance your hormones and clear your skin.

If your acne keeps showing up in the same place… it’s not random. 🔎

When women come to see me, the first thing we do is zoom out and look at the pattern, timing, and triggers behind their breakouts.

For some women, acne can actually be one of the main signs of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome or PMOS (formerly known as Polycystic O***y Syndrome, PCOS).

This is especially the case if you’re noticing:
✨ Chin + jawline breakouts
✨ Irregular periods
✨ Excess hair growth

When this pattern shows up, we may look a little deeper with hormone testing to understand what’s going on beneath the surface.

Things like:
✔️ Testosterone
✔️ DHEAS
✔️ LH + FSH

Because once we understand your hormones, we can start treating your acne in a way that actually works for your body.

✨ And this is just one piece of the puzzle…

Taking a careful health and hormone history, along with targeted testing (when needed), helps us clearly understand the root cause of your acne and which treatments will actually work for you.
