Most relationship damage doesn’t come from one big event. It comes from the stories we tell ourselves when we feel hurt, scared, rejected, or disconnected.

A powerful question to ask is:
“What am I assuming right now, and have I checked if it’s true?”

Assumptions create distance. Curiosity creates connection.

You weren’t difficult. You were unheard.

So many people grow up believing they were “too much,” “too sensitive,” or “too emotional,” when what they were actually experiencing was the pain of not being understood.

When your needs are dismissed, your feelings minimized, or your voice ignored, you may learn to protest louder, shut down completely, or question your own reality.

Being unheard can look like anxiety, people-pleasing, anger, withdrawal, perfectionism, or feeling disconnected in relationships.

Healing begins when someone listens without trying to fix, dismiss, or judge you.

You were never asking for too much.
You were asking to be seen, felt, and understood.

A little human “ness” to add to the therapy world!

Being a therapist is a big part of our lives but at the end of the day were humans too! A big part of our work at Soma is creating a space that echoes relational work, and showing our “human side”!

If youre a therapist, what human moments have you had recently?

Have you ever wondered why someone can genuinely want connection… yet pull away when things start to feel emotionally close?

Think of it like making dinner.

You make a plan. You buy the ingredients. You picture how nice it will be to sit down and enjoy the meal.

But when it’s finally time to start cooking, fear creeps in.

“What if I mess this up?”
“What if I’m not enough?”
“What if this is too much?”

So you tell yourself you’ll do it later.

The ingredients sit on the counter. They spoil. They begin to smell. Now the problem isn’t just making dinner, it’s also the guilt, shame, and overwhelm that have built up over time.

For many people with avoidant attachment, emotional closeness can feel similar. It’s not always a lack of love or desire for connection. Often, their nervous system has learned that vulnerability feels risky, so creating distance becomes a way to feel safe.

The challenge is that while avoidance may reduce anxiety in the moment, it often creates more distance, loneliness, and disconnection over time.

Healing doesn’t require a perfect meal. It starts with one small step toward connection: a difficult conversation, expressing one feeling, staying present a little longer, or allowing someone to support you.

Avoidant attachment isn’t about not caring.

It’s often about protecting yourself in the only way you’ve learned.

💛 Which part of the dinner analogy resonated with you most? Let us know in the comments.

This analogy describes one common pattern seen in avoidant attachment. Attachment styles exist on a spectrum, and everyone’s experiences are shaped by their unique relationships, history, and nervous system.

Most couples don’t struggle because they don’t love each other. They struggle because they get stuck in patterns that leave both people feeling unheard, alone, or misunderstood. Couples therapy helps you slow down the cycle and learn how to reconnect.
