Starting acupuncture at 37 weeks isn't just a wellness trend. Here is the research behind it.

Studies on pre-birth (labour preparation) acupuncture, including the well-known Betts & Lennox (2006) study of 169 women, found that weekly treatment from 36–37 weeks was associated with:

🔹 Reduced need for medical induction
🔹 Lower rates of epidural use
🔹 Fewer emergency caesarean deliveries
🔹 Higher rates of spontaneous vaginal birth
🔹 Shorter active labour duration (Zeisler et al., 1998)

A larger 2020 clinical audit of over 6,000 women in an NHS hospital setting also found reduced surgical birth rates and shorter hospital stays among those who received pre-birth acupuncture.

If you're 37+ weeks pregnant and want to give your body the best possible preparation for labour, let's chat about starting your pre-birth series.

As always, this complements — not replaces — your midwifery/OB care. 💛

Sweating more in this heat? This simple homemade electrolyte drink helps replenish fluids and minerals after hot days, workouts, or time in the sun. In TCM, excessive sweat can leave you feeling depleted, so summer is a good time to hydrate a little more intentionally.

Save this recipe for the next hot day.

Ovulation is the most energetically powerful moment of your entire cycle. In traditional chinese medicine (TCM), this is the moment Yin reaches its peak and beautifully transforms into Yang nourishing energy shifting into activating energy. The shift invites your body to release a healthy, mature egg.

I look for the following in your cycle:

🔵 Strong Kidney Yin → leads to a well-developed follicle, abundant cervical mucus, strong libido, a good estrogen rise, a perfectly thick uterine lining

🟡 Healthy Kidney Yang → a timely, clear ovulation, a strong temperature rise on your basal body temperature BBT chart or wearable that rises and stays high.

🌿 Freely flowing Liver Qi → as emotional ease around mid-cycle, low bloating, low breast tenderness, ovulation that happens smoothly with low ovulation pain or discomfort

I support your ovulation with acupuncture, herbal medicine, mindfulness and nourishing food suggestions. Research supports this framework with a 2023 systematic review finding that TCM combined with acupuncture significantly improved ovulation rates, offering a powerful complement to conventional care. Your cycle is one of your body's most intelligent systems. Ovulation is its monthly peak performance.

Save this as your TCM mid-cycle reference guide.

If you'd love support in getting your ovulation feeling its best, that's exactly what I’m here for. 🌿

A healthy period shows up regularly, lasts 4–5 days, and flows moderately. Mild cramping, small clots, and gentle mood shifts are all normal.

What isn’t normal, even if it feels that way is this:
↓ Irregular cycles
↓ Very heavy or extremely light flow (1–2 days only)
↓ Debilitating cramps or strong low back pain
↓ Many or large clots
↓ Spotting before or after your period
↓ Mood swings that derail your entire week
These are common. They are not something you just have to live with.

Your cycle is one of the clearest windows into your hormonal and reproductive health and in most cases, these patterns can be addressed with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and lifestyle shifts.

You deserve to feel better during your period. 🌸

If you’re trying to improve egg quality, I want you to know this: it’s not about doing everything perfectly. It’s about creating the right conditions for your body over time.

In Chinese medicine, we look at fertility through the lens of nourishment, circulation, and regulation. That means supporting Blood, calming the nervous system and strengthening Kidney Essence/Jing.

From a functional medicine perspective, I also look at sleep, blood sugar balance, inflammation, protection against oxidative stress and improving nutrient intake.

Your fertility prep to optimize egg quality can begin now. Small changes consistently over time make meaningful improvements .

A deeply nourishing bowl rooted in Chinese medicine food therapy , designed to support Kidney Jing, build Blood, and reduce oxidative stress in ovarian tissue. 🌿 Warming, grounding, and genuinely delicious.

FERTILITY CONGEE FOR OVARIAN HEALTH
Ingredients
1/2 cup short grain rice - 4 cups bone broth - 2 cups water - 1 tbsp fresh ginger - 2 garlic cloves - 3 tbsp goji berries - 2 tbsp black sesame seeds - 1/3 cup walnuts - 2 soft eggs - 2 cups dark leafy greens - 1 avocado - 1/2 tsp turmeric - 1 tbsp tamari - 1 tsp sesame oil - salt + white pepper

Method:
1. Combine rice, broth, water, ginger, garlic, and turmeric. Bring to a boil then simmer low and slow until thick and porridge-like.

2. Toast sesame seeds and walnuts in a dry pan until fragrant. Set aside.

3. Stir greens into congee in the last 5 minutes. Season with tamari, sesame oil, salt, and white pepper.

4. Poach or soft boil eggs (3 mins for runny, 6–7 for soft set).

5. Assemble and top with seeds, walnuts, goji berries, avocado, and egg. Finish with a drizzle of sesame oil. 🌸

Why these ingredients:
🖤 Black sesame — Kidney Yin tonic, zinc-rich, supports egg quality
🫐 Goji berries — nourishes Blood, high in antioxidants
🦴 Bone broth — deeply nourishing to Kidney Jing
🥚 Eggs — choline + healthy fats for follicle development
🥑 Avocado — folate, Vitamin E, hormone balance

Food is medicine, and it works best as part of a full plan. If you're supporting your ovarian reserve, I'd love to build a protocol with you. 🌸

Let's talk about antral follicle count.

🌸Your AFC is one of the key markers used to assess ovarian reserve — the number of eggs remaining in your ovaries. It's measured by ultrasound at the beginning of your cycle, and a low count is often part of a diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) diagnosis.

🌸Here's what I want you to know:

1. AFC measures quantity, not quality. Egg quality is strongly tied to age — and that means there's more nuance to your situation than this one number.

2. A 2026 randomized sham-controlled trial — one of the most rigorous study designs in clinical research — found that women who received acupuncture for 12 weeks showed a statistically significant increase in AFC compared to those who received sham treatment.

3. Acupuncture may work by reducing oxidative stress in ovarian tissue, supporting the hormonal communication between your brain and ovaries, and helping protect existing follicles from unnecessary loss.

🌸After 21 years specializing in fertility and women's reproductive health, I've watched women reclaim hope in situations that felt hopeless. The research now supports what I've seen in clinic for years.

🌸If you are trying to conceive and want to optimize your antral follicle count. I'm here to support you.

We’re learning more and more about what’s possible when it comes to ovarian reserve — and the research is catching up to what we see clinically.

Your antral follicle count (AFC) is the number of follicles visible on ultrasound, and it’s one of the key markers used to assess ovarian reserve.

A 2026 randomized clinical trial published in the International Journal of Women’s Health found that acupuncture may help improve AFC in women with diminished ovarian reserve.

If you’ve been told your numbers are low, that’s not the end of the story. I’d love to help you explore what’s possible.

We've been talking this spring about the Liver, the gallbladder, the wood element, and what it means for your body this season. Yet, fertility is one of the most important places that connection shows up. 🌿

If you’ve ever left a fertility appointment feeling overwhelmed by acronyms, this post is for you. AFC, AMH, and FSH are three of the main markers used to assess ovarian reserve.
Antral Follicle Count (AFC) is measured by ultrasound. Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a blood test that can usually be done at any point in the cycle. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is also a blood test, typically measured early in the cycle.

Here's what I always remind my clients: these numbers are information, not a verdict. They help guide the conversation, they don't define what's possible for you.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, your fertility is a reflection of your whole body's health. These markers are one piece of a much bigger picture, and there is often so much we can do to support the terrain.
If you'd like help understanding your results and what they might mean for your overall picture, I'd love to connect. 🌸
