🎙️ Shoulder Health Tips for Overhead Athletes

I’m Dalen Friesen, Sports Physiotherapist at Body Works Sports Physiotherapy in North Vancouver. I recently returned from supporting high school volleyball athletes in Toronto, Calgary, and BC Provincials, working with thousands of young athletes throughout the season.

One common challenge we see across volleyball, baseball, tennis, and other overhead sports is increased stress on the shoulder. Repetitive, high-velocity movements can place significant demand on the smaller stabilizing muscles that help keep the shoulder healthy and performing at its best.

A simple pre-game or pre-practice warm-up can make a big difference:
✔️ Small arm circles at shoulder height
✔️ Shoulder rotations with elbows at shoulder level
✔️ Resistance band exercises for shoulder stability and control

The goal is to activate these muscles and create a mild fatigue that quickly disappears when you stop. These exercises can be done courtside, on the field, or before training sessions.

Feel that tight pull in your shoulders or upper back? This one’s a game changer 👇

Your lats (latissimus dorsi) can get seriously tight—especially if you sit a lot, train upper body, or struggle with overhead movement. When they’re stiff, your shoulders and back pay the price.

In this video, our physiotherapist Naz shows a simple wall-based stretch to loosen things up:

• Back flat to the wall
• Slight squat
• Elbows + hands together in front
• Slowly reach up overhead without losing contact

You should feel a deep stretch through your sides and upper back.

Hold 5–10 seconds, breathe in… then exhale and relax. Repeat 5x.

✨ Great for:
• Shoulder stiffness
• Upper back tension
• Limited overhead mobility

If it feels pinchy or painful, don’t push through it—get it checked.
