Rain or shine, it is normal to see bears during the day. Black bears aren't nocturnal. Healthy mature male bears often secure the best home ranges. Preferred habitats are away from people, safe and abundant with food. These dominant bears also secure the best time slot to be most active - at night when people are mostly sleeping. This pressures vulnerable bears to be most active during the day in an effort to avoid males who are a danger, especially to cubs and young bears. The bears we typically see travelling through residential areas or on local trails are older bears, females with cubs, young bears living independently of mom and those seeking a place to rest injuries.
Bears are not in our community to harm us and data shows that bears are regularly active in neighbourhoods without incident. However, we must make efforts to never approach or feed bears. Bears will be killed for supplementing their natural diet with anything we leave available to them. Bears can be taught and we can do better, being killed for our carelessness and lack of respect is unforgivable.
Far too many residents across the North Shore (and beyond) are making no effort to reduce bear activity close to homes. We need your help sharing education with neighbours, friends and family. Let them know about our new website which supports residents with attractant management, bear behaviour, the best practices for trail use, bear spray and so much more!
