A man with severe depression laughed with his daughter for the first time in years after psilocybin therapy. That story, at the end of Dr. Ishrat Husain’s piece in Maclean’s this week, is why this work matters.
Dr. Husain also writes that the right structures must exist "if we can establish that psilocybin is safe and effective." In our view, that question has been answered. Psilocybin is both safe and effective, and the clinical trials back that up.
Like any medication, it isn't right for everyone, but that's exactly why we need regulations, trained practitioners, and clinical standards so that the people who could benefit actually can.
Delivered with proper care and support, psilocybin can be life-changing, and in many cases, life-saving. It does not belong only in specialist clinics. It belongs wherever a qualified practitioner and a patient decide together that it's right.
