Medetomidine Found in the Fentanyl Supply
A new and dangerous substance—medetomidine (a veterinary sedative)—is now being detected in illicit fentanyl across the country significantly increasing the risk of overdose and severe withdrawal.
🚨 Why this matters:
• Not approved for human use
• Causes deep sedation & slowed breathing
• NOT reversed by Narcan alone
• Often mixed with fentanyl—users may not know it’s present No antidote exists
⚠️ New Withdrawal Concerns:
This combination is leading to more severe and complex withdrawal symptoms, including:
• Agitation
• High blood pressure
• Rapid heart rate
• Confusion or altered mental status
🆘 What to do in an overdose:
• Give Narcan immediately (for the opioid component)
• Call 911
• Monitor breathing closely
• Be aware: multiple doses may be needed, and sedation may persist
