VOICE for deaf and hard of hearing children was established in the early ’60s by parents to offer support to other families with children who were deaf and hard of hearing. These Toronto parents wanted their children to be educated alongside their hearing peers in mainstream schools. By working collectively they succeeded in achieving this goal and had the tremendous benefit of sharing information and providing support to one another.

As mentioned in our previous post, Saturday morning was filled with learning and connection as we explored ways to support our kids with hearing loss as they navigate post-secondary pursuits. ❤️

While we learned, the kids had fun with the amazing Cedar Ridge Camp counsellors! 🏕️

The afternoon was all about family time, exploring and enjoying all the wonderful things camp has to offer. Our campers did all of it: Canoeing, high ropes, rock climbing, volleyball, swimming, horseback riding and more! There was something for everyone.

Grateful for opportunities like this that bring families together, create connections, and help our kids feel supported and empowered for the future.

✨ A Wonderful Start to VOICE Camp Weekend ✨

Friday evening marked the beginning of our 30th Anniversary of VOICE Camp and our 3rd year at Cedar Ridge Camp. Families travelled from communities across Ontario to come together for a very special few days.

The weekend began with a bonfire under a cool, clear night sky. It was the perfect setting to welcome campers and families, reconnect with old friends, and begin forming new friendships.

We are incredibly grateful to our largest sponsor, The Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children (Elks of Canada) and The Ontario Elks, for helping make this evening so special. Randy Vincent, from the Wellington Chapter of the Ontario Elks, hosted a lovely wine and cheese evening, while the kids were treated to an assortment of candy and goodies to get them excited for the weekend ahead. 🍬

There was plenty of laughter, conversation, and anticipation in the air as familiar faces reunited and new connections were made. It was a wonderful reminder of the community and friendships that make VOICE Camp so meaningful.

What a beautiful way to begin an incredible weekend! ❤️🔥

VOICE Camp is underway!

This morning, our kids are out gallivanting, connecting, exploring, and having a whole lot of fun with the amazing Cedar Ridge Camp counsellors!

Meanwhile, our parents are diving into meaningful conversations and learning lots from our wonderful guest speakers, Zach and Erick Sturm, VOICE Camp alumni. We’re so grateful for the energy, wisdom, and connection filling the room today!

Calling all parents and families! 📣

We are sharing an important research opportunity from the University of Ottawa for parents of children with hearing loss. Sarah Pignac, an audiologist and PhD candidate, is conducting a study to better understand how families experience the cochlear implant assessment process and make decisions about hearing technology.

Who is eligible to participate?
- Parents or guardians of a child 17 years or younger.
- Your child is currently undergoing, or has undergone, a cochlear implant candidacy assessment in Canada in 2018 or later.
- The ear considered for cochlear implantation has hearing levels better than the severe-to-profound range.
- You are able to participate in a 45–60 minute virtual interview in English or French.

(Note: Participants will be asked to provide at least one audiological report from 2018 or later to confirm eligibility, and participation is selected on a first-come, first-served basis).
