Myopia, or nearsightedness, often becomes more noticeable during the school years when visual demands increase. Because children may not always realize their vision is blurry, the signs can be subtle at first.
Common indicators include squinting to see the board, sitting closer to the front of the classroom or screens, holding books or devices very close, and difficulty seeing distant objects clearly. Some children may also complain of headaches or eye strain after visual tasks, while others simply adapt without reporting symptoms.
In school settings, myopia can affect classroom participation, copying from the board, and overall learning comfort. Since distance vision plays a key role in many academic activities, uncorrected myopia may impact performance and confidence over time.
Myopia occurs when the eye grows longer than normal, causing light to focus in front of the retina and making distant objects appear blurry. It often progresses gradually, which is why early recognition is important.
Understanding the signs helps parents and teachers identify when a child may need an eye exam and proper evaluation.
