Dr. Jody Carrington Psychologist | Speaker | Best-Selling Author I passionately believe in the power of the relationship with the people we love, lead, and teach.
(451)

As a clinical psychologist, I have spent most of my career working with children and families who have experienced trauma. Growing up on a farm in rural Alberta, Canada, and after 13 years (!) of post-secondary education, I took my first job on the Mental Health Inpatient Units of the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. It was during those 10 years that I learned the most about kids, families,

relationships, and the vital importance of connection. Today, I’m back living in a rural setting, managing a private practice, raising a family, speaking around the country about relationships, connection and my new book, Kids These Days. My favourite thing on the planet to do is to speak with educators—they have the power to change the trajectory of a life every single day. It’s time that we need to start focusing less on kids these days, and more on those of you who hold them every day. The core of everything I speak and write about comes down to this: we are wired to do hard things. We can do those hard things so much easier when we remember this: we are wired for connection. Join us on this journey to build a strong, connected community—it’s a (re)connection revolution starting now.

We’re all just trying to hold it together in a world that feels like it’s burning down. Uncertainty. Fear. No end in sight. These are not just buzzwords, they are the ingredients of dysregulation. And they’re stealing the best parts of us.

In this raw, real, and soul-shifting conversation, I sat down with the incredible to talk about her book "A Love Affair with the Unknown" and the question we're all asking right now: How do we be okay when things are not okay?

Here’s what we landed on:

We don’t get stronger by avoiding fear—we grow by naming it and sitting in it.
Healing starts when the nervous system feels safe again. Not before.
Curiosity is the antidote to control. Certainty is a myth, but wonder is medicine.
Slowing down is NOT weakness, it’s where the wisdom lives.

Let this be your reminder: Hope is a choice. You are not broken. Maybe, just maybe you’ve just lost access to the best parts of you. Let’s get it back.

🖤 Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Tell me in the comments: Where did we first connect? Or if we've met in person, where did we meet?

A conference?
A school?
A book signing?
Social media?
A gravel pit in Alberta?
Maybe it was somewhere else entirely.

I'm curious. I'd love to hear your story. 👇❤️

As we head into these final weeks of school here in Canada…I am thinking about how much is being carried right now. So much has chanced since I was a kid (as seen in these photos). We are the first generation that the world has this much access to us.

Teachers are holding classrooms together while managing exhaustion, emotion, and countdown energy. Parents are juggling all the things while trying to get everyone to the finish line in one piece. And kids. They’re feeling all of it too.

Here’s the part we don’t say enough: It’s not about the kids. Because if us parents aren’t okay and the teachers aren’t okay…the kids don’t stand a chance. The adults matter too. In fact, if I had to pick, I'd say us adults matter the most.

So if you’re in it right now on either side of the classroom door (or both!) you’re doing holy work. We're here to walk each other home. Full stop.

Keep going, dear ones. If you only knew how much you matter.
Then, and only then, take care of each other in the process.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jody who was once Little Jody

There's so much pressure in this world of parenting that - to be brutally honest - I didn't see coming. I thought (before I became a parent) that this notion of loving being a mother would always take precedence over the love I have for my work. That's what (most) every woman who came before me seemed to embody. There have been many seasons of guilt where I realize just how much I love my work; I often feel far more competent as a psychologist than I ever do as a mom. Also, since I think work-life balance is bu****it these days; it's impossible to separate the two.

Here's what I think about a lot: When we try to be "everything" to our kids, we accidentally hand them the heavy-duty job of being our entire world. We can't tell them how to love life and dream big - we have to show them. Without an iota of hesitation - my three kids that we worked so hard to have are my greatest teachers. I've never also loved someone (or anything) that deeply.

So if that's true, I want them to watch me choosing myself sometimes, so they have the actual blueprint to go out and do the exact same thing (in whatever way that looks for each of them). That's the part that I can't wait to watch unfold.

Ps. Let's talk about this more at my next virtual workshop, on June 8 at 6:30pm MST. Visit drjodycarrington.com/workshops to register for Parenting on Empty: How to (Re)Connect When You’ve Got Nothing Left. It's a 90 minute clinical workshop, has a seven day replay and printable resources.

Everyone deserves a Marti.

The one who...
believes in you (especially when you don't believe in yourself),
who stands beside you (even through questionable choices),
has been there for a decade since (the depth of relationship is the hardest to maintain),
keeps things honest and organized,
reminds you don't have to do it all,
and relentlessly cheers you on.

Marti and I have built this dream together for over a decade now. We met, officially, when our kids were on the same hockey team. She started two half-days a week, and I knew from day one, she was magic. She is, indeed, as kind and genuine in real life as she seems. The beautiful human who isn’t only my business companion, but a mom, a wife, a friend, and simply one of the good ones. When you find one, if you've got one, work the hardest to keep them close.

This event was magical! Our friends at Make-A-Wish know that hope is medicine. That when are darkest days come, a little sunshine can make it all a little more bearable. Together, an incredible group of humans gathered on a Monday night in Edmonton. It was a night of hope, with humans supporting little humans and their families. Thank you, from the bottom of my soul, to everyone who attended, donated gifts, bought raffle tickets, shared posts, and told a friend. Together we raised $30,000 and we can't wait to do more. xo

Passion rides shotgun to purpose...

Think about the most confident, self-assured, respected person you've spent time with in your lifetime. Someone who was passionate and inspirational. What do you notice about them? How did they treat others? How did they speak about themselves? See, when you walk with a sense of purpose, when you know where it is you're going, you show up differently. We often think it's because they found their purpose. I think, however that the most admirable among us are much clearer about they purpose than their passion. Passion is something that so many of us chase. We long to be feel the passion that will make work feel like a joyful, meaningful, blissful endeavour. I have heard, many times, "I wish I was passionate about something"; or asked "How do you find your passion?" I think sometimes that in our desire to find the passion, we miss being clear on why first. Because if you can answer that question clearly-the purpose of why, as a human, you're here on this planet-it's so much easier to stay passionate about whatever it is that you do. So I'm not looking relentlessly for this elusive passion thing. To remind me of the purpose of why I"m on this planet, I need somewhere to reconnect as frequently as I'm able. And remarkably, passion follows.

The question that often leads me back to this "why thing" the fastest is "Do you know how important you are to so many people?" Just for a moment today, think about just how much you matter to so many. I, for one, am so glad you're here. xo
