Iron deficiency is a very common concern.
Recently the reference range for ferritin (iron stores) on lab work was modified to more closely fit what we see clinically: when ferritin is below 30, people are really struggling. Below 50, and there can still be symptoms.
Signs & symptoms of low iron: fatigue, brittle hair & nails, pale skin & tongue, heavy periods, dark circles under eyes, hair loss, shortness of breath, cold hands & feet, cracks at the edge of the mouth, craving ice, restless legs, insomnia, poor focus, heart palpitations.
Many of these symptoms require a more thorough work-up to rule out other issues, and it’s best to determine the root cause of low iron.
Iron deficiency could be from:
- bleeding (menstrual, digestive, injury, medications)
- lack of iron intake (especially with vegetarian & vegan diets)
- poor iron absorption (low stomach acid, digestive surgeries, celiac or IBD)
- chronic infections (H pylori and others)
- inflammation (this can also make ferritin look high)
There are numerous ways to support iron deficiency. I like to look at TCM to get a full picture that nourishes blood building. This includes foods that contain iron, and cooking methods to encourage balanced systems.
I also use strategies that improve the digestion and absorption of iron like: digestive enzymes or bitters, HCL or ACV, homeopathic tissue salts. (All while figuring out the cause).
Just because a health concern is common, does not make it “normal”.
Make sure you work with someone that’s willing to support you in understanding the signals from your body, who is interested in you feeling better and who wants you to stay well for the long run.
See you soon!
