Ever stretch a tight muscle, feel instant relief, only for it to tighten right back up a few hours later? 🔄⚡

Here’s why that happens: tightness isn’t always a “short” muscle problem. It’s often a protective response.

When a joint lacks stability, your nervous system steps in to protect the area by signaling nearby muscles to tighten up and act as a brake.

Stretching might ease the symptom temporarily, but if your brain still senses instability at the joint level, it will turn that tension right back on.

To actually resolve chronic tightness, treatment needs to address the root cause:
1️⃣ Restore Joint Movement: Ensure the joint itself is moving properly before working on the surrounding tissue.

2️⃣ Build Strength in the New Range: Use targeted isometric exercises (“static squeezes”) so your brain recognizes the new movement as safe.

3️⃣ Retrain Movement Patterns: Adjust daily habits—how you sit, lift, and move—so your nervous system stops defaulting to protective guarding.

Give the joint real stability, and your body finally gets the green light to let the muscle relax. 🧠💡

📌 Save this post for the next time a stubborn tight spot keeps coming back, or share it with someone who is constantly stretching without relief!

Have questions about a recurring tight muscle? Give our team a call or book online at the link in our bio—we’re here to help you get to the root of it. 📱✨

From 6% to the Frontline.

Thirty years ago, medical care was built on a “default” model that largely overlooked female physiology. In the mid-90s, women were the minority in almost every doctoral medical program in Canada, and they were included in as little as 6% of sports science research.

Representation isn’t just a metric—it’s the key to better data. As more women enter the field, the “standard” is changing. We are finally asking better questions about female-specific biomechanics, hormonal health, and recovery patterns.

At Back to Function, our team of 11 practitioners includes 8 women leading the way in evidence-based care. We are proud to be part of a generation that is ensuring medical data actually reflects the community we serve.

Swipe to see the evolution of healthcare in Canada and how the numbers have shifted over the past 30 years. 🇨🇦💪
