Can AI really be a safe therapist?
AI chatbots are increasingly being used to talk about stress, anxiety and mental health. But should we treat an AI chatbot like a therapist?
Researchers at the University of Ottawa and CAMH are exploring a different approach: developing AI tools with clinical safeguards, evidence-based information and mechanisms designed to reduce inaccurate or inappropriate responses.
One project, UbiMyTherapist, is exploring how information such as sleep and heart-rate data could help identify changes in stress, while using a defined clinical knowledge base to help keep AI responses grounded.
But there is an important limitation: AI is not a replacement for a healthcare professional.
Privacy, bias, reliability and patient safety all need to be carefully considered before AI is used widely in mental-health care.
At Orleans Family Health Clinic, we believe technology should support healthcare β while keeping the patient and the human healthcare relationship at the centre.
