πŸ’Š More people are taking supplements than ever before β€” but are they always necessary?

A new 25-year study found that supplement use among adults increased from 51% to 60%, with the biggest growth among adults over age 65.

Popular supplements on the rise include:
βœ… Vitamin D
βœ… Zinc
βœ… Turmeric/curcumin
βœ… Omega-3
βœ… Probiotics
βœ… Collagen
βœ… Ashwagandha

But "natural" does not always mean risk-free.

Some supplements can interact with prescription medications or affect medical conditions.

That's why it is important to tell your healthcare team about everything you take β€” including vitamins and herbal products.

At OFHC, we believe in complete, connected care. Your health decisions should include the full picture.

Does your child experience severe vomiting or diarrhea a few hours after eating certain foods, but allergy skin tests come back negative? It might not be a stomach bug β€” it could be a lesser-known condition called FPIES.

Researchers from the McGill University Health Centre just published the first Canadian study on Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES). Because this rare allergy is delayed and doesn't cause classic symptoms like hives or swelling, it is frequently misdiagnosed as gastroenteritis.

Key findings from the Canadian study:
- Delayed Reactions: Symptoms typically hit 1 to 4 hours after eating.
- The Main Triggers: In Canada, eggs were the top trigger (1 in 3 cases), followed by seafood (1 in 5), milk, fish, and peanuts.
- Hidden Risks: Misdiagnosis often leads to parents unnecessarily restricting too many foods, risking nutritional deficiencies during critical growth windows.

The good news? Most children naturally outgrow FPIES over time.

If you suspect your child is reacting to specific foods hours after eating them, keeping a detailed food symptom log is an excellent first step. Read our full clinical breakdown on the OFHC blog to learn more about identifying symptoms and safely navigating infant nutrition.

Seniors are at higher risk of serious influenza complications β€” but new research offers reassuring news about enhanced flu vaccines.

A major study involving more than 429,000 adults aged 65+ found that:
βœ”οΈ Adjuvanted flu vaccines (such as Fluad)
βœ”οΈ High-dose flu vaccines

provided very similar protection against:
β€’ Laboratory-confirmed influenza
β€’ Emergency visits
β€’ Hospitalization
β€’ Pneumonia-related complications

The key message: enhanced influenza vaccines remain an important part of preventive care for older adults.

At Orleans Family Health Clinic, we encourage seniors to discuss annual influenza vaccination with their healthcare provider to help reduce the risk of severe seasonal illness.
