Stimming is one of those words that's showing up more and more online, but it's often misunderstood.
The reality? Stimming isn't "attention-seeking" or something that always needs to be stopped. It's often a way our brains and bodies regulate emotions, process sensory input, or find a sense of calm.
For some people, stimming looks like bouncing a leg or twirling their hair. For others, it might be rocking, pacing, humming, or fidgeting with an object. Every person is different, and every nervous system has its own way of coping.
The more we understand behaviours like stimming, the more compassion we can have, for ourselves and for the people around us. 🤍
Have you heard the term before, or is this your first time learning about it?
