U.S.-style two-tier health care has no place in Canada. A new Abacus poll shows that Canadians widely oppose the introduction of two-tier health care in Alberta, set to take effect on September 1.

Alberta's Bill 11 creates the legal framework for American-style, two-tier health care and the establishment of private health insurance, while allowing private payment for medically necessary care. This law will cause gross inequities in access to health care in Alberta and it threatens public health care across Canada. A dramatic cost increase to the NCLEX-RN exam will add yet another financial barrier for students entering the nursing profession, at a time when Canada is already facing a shortage of nurses. Nursing students in Canada already contend with significant financial barriers, and this increased fee will only make matters worse.
