Autoimmunity runs in your family. How do you protect your kids?
If you have an autoimmune condition, it’s natural to wonder whether your children are at greater risk. Unfortunately, the answer is yes -- there if often a genetic predisposition. Genetics, however, are only part of the picture.
Autoimmune conditions present as a result of complex interactions between our genes, the immune system, and our environment (ex. nutrition, gut health, infections, stress, etc.). As such, our genes are on a dimmer switch; their activity can be turned up or turned down, and that is often within our control.
Having your child's determinants of health assessed by a professional is the key to reducing their risk of developing an autoimmune condition, or severe protracted flare-ups. Taking it that one step further can go a long way in protecting those you love.
