In October 2020, Colleen survived a severe heart attack. It started with pain in her shoulders and jaw, followed by nausea, cold sweats and extreme fatigue. At first, she found reasons to explain the symptoms, but her husband knew something wasn’t right and called 911.

Paramedics did an ECG on the spot and rushed her from Russell straight to the Heart Institute, where our team was waiting and confirmed she needed an emergency procedure.

Since then, cardiac rehabilitation, lifestyle changes and the support of her family have all been part of her recovery. Today, she looks at life a little differently. ❤️

“I feel rejuvenated and more alive than ever before. Surviving the widowmaker brought home the stark realization of life’s fragility, making my family and the people in my life more precious and small everyday moments more special.”

Thank you, Colleen, for sharing your story ❤️

For the past 10 years, Dr. Heather Foulds has studied how identity, culture and community connect to heart attack and stroke risk. This week, we had the privilege of welcoming her to the Heart Institute, where she shared her research with our teams.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, she shares why culturally safe care matters, and why healthcare providers need to recognize different understandings of health and well-being when caring for Indigenous Peoples. 🧡

Depuis 10 ans, Heather Foulds, Ph.

This week’s story takes us to our imaging floor, where you’ll find the Vered Tree of Life, created by Anishinaabe artist Simon Brascoupé. ❤️

The painting brings together the beauty of the world outside our doors, the healing hands inside, and the support of donors in our community who help make the Heart Institute a place of healing, learning and caring.

It was commissioned in recognition of Mr. Zeev Vered and his family for their generous support of the Heart Institute. ❤️

If you’re on the imaging floor, take a look next time you walk by. 😉

It's so important to keep talking about women's heart health, and it's great to see it getting the attention it deserves. ❤️

Here in Canada, a woman has a heart attack every 20 minutes, yet heart disease remains under-studied, under-diagnosed and under-treated in women. It's the gap our Canadian Women's Heart Health Centre works to close, through research, care and awareness.

This conversation is especially meaningful this September as we JUMP IN For Women's Heart Health and come together to raise awareness and support better heart health for women across Canada.💪❤️
