Spinal Manipulation for Scoliosis: What the Evidence Shows
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis examined whether manual therapy, including spinal manipulation, improves outcomes for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Researchers analyzed 4 randomized controlled trials involving 213 patients to evaluate changes in spinal curvature, pain, and function.
Scientific Findings:
▪Manual therapy alone showed limited evidence for correcting spinal curvature (Cobb angle).
▪When used alongside exercise-based rehabilitation, some studies found small improvements in flexibility and posture.
▪No strong evidence supported spinal manipulation as a stand-alone treatment for scoliosis.
▪Authors concluded that manual therapy may serve as an adjunct to other evidence-based interventions, not a replacement.
What does this mean?
Chiropractic adjustments can help improve mobility, pain, and posture, but the research suggests they work best as part of a broader care plan, not as the only treatment. When combined with exercise, postural retraining, or bracing, spinal manipulation may support better movement and comfort, even if it doesn’t directly “straighten” the spine.
