🚨 Wildfire Smoke & Your Home AC: Are You Using It Safely? 🚨

With smoke from northwestern Ontario triggering air quality warnings across the province, many patients are asking: Is it safe to run my air conditioning?

The short answer is yes — if it's set correctly! 🏠👇

Most standard home AC units and window air conditioners do not pull in air from the outside. They simply cool and recirculate the air already inside your home, making them safe to run while keeping your windows firmly closed to block out the haze.

⚠️ The Exception: If your HVAC system features a "fresh air intake," make sure to switch it to recirculate mode or close the outdoor damper completely.

How to keep your indoor air clean during smoke events:
✅ Upgrade your furnace filter to a MERV 13 rating or higher and run the HVAC fan continuously.
✅ Run a portable HEPA air purifier in high-traffic rooms like bedrooms.
✅ Avoid indoor particle-creators like frying foods, burning candles, or vacuuming.
❌ Skip regular cloth or surgical masks if you must go outside — they don't seal well enough to filter fine smoke particles. Opt for a well-fitted N95, KN95, or KF94 respirator instead.

If you or your children have asthma, ensure you have a full supply of both your daily controller and emergency reliever inhalers on hand.

Stay indoors as much as possible, keep an eye on Environment Canada's Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), and listen to your body. If you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, severe coughing, or heart palpitations, seek medical attention immediately.

A Canadian woman’s dream backpacking trip through Southeast Asia turned into a years-long neurological recovery after she contracted Japanese encephalitis — a mosquito-borne virus that can cause severe brain inflammation, seizures, permanent disability, and death.

While Japanese encephalitis is considered rare among travellers, severe cases can be catastrophic. Her story is a powerful reminder that travel health decisions should consider not only how likely an infection is, but how serious the consequences can be.

More on JE here: https://healthytrip.ca/services/japanese-encephalitis/

At Destinations Travel Clinic, our physicians and nurses specializing in travel medicine provide individualized pre-travel assessments based on:
• Your destinations
• Duration of travel
• Rural vs urban exposure
• Planned activities
• Seasonal disease risks

Travel vaccines and prevention strategies are not one-size-fits-all.

If you’re planning travel to Asia, Africa, South America, or other regions with mosquito-borne diseases, book your travel consultation early and travel informed.

https://healthytrip.ca/cyclosporiasis-2026-canadian-travelers-mexico/

Heading south or monitoring the latest health news? ✈️ Severe outbreaks of Cyclosporiasis (a waterborne and foodborne parasite) are making headlines in the U.S., but public health data shows a completely different trend here in Canada.

While cases are currently climbing in provinces like Quebec and B.C., Canadian health authorities confirm these numbers are primarily linked to international travel — specifically to Mexico — alongside typical summer upticks from imported raw produce.

What should you look out for?
- Cyclospora causes severe, watery diarrhea, intense bloating, stomach cramps, and profound fatigue.
- Unlike standard food poisoning, symptoms take about a week to appear and can cycle on and off for over a month if left untreated.
- Standard chlorine washes and hand sanitizers don't easily kill this parasite.

If you are traveling abroad this summer, protect your health by drinking bottled water, avoiding raw unpeeled fruits or leafy salads, and eating foods that are served steaming hot.

Returned home recently and dealing with persistent digestive symptoms? Standard stool tests often miss this parasite. Contact your healthcare provider or reach out to a specialized clinic to discuss targeted diagnostic testing and highly effective prescription options.

It's mosquito season again in Ottawa, and Ottawa Public Health is reminding residents that West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEEV) are both circulating locally. Prevention is still your best defence.

A few reminders before your next evening outside:
✔️ Use a Health Canada-approved repellent with DEET or icaridin
✔️ Take extra care between dusk and dawn, especially near shady or wooded areas
✔️ Cover up with light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing
✔️ Make sure window and door screens are in good repair
✔️ Empty standing water around your home weekly — it's where mosquitoes breed

Destinations Travel Clinic carries Health Canada-approved repellents and after-bite relief products to help keep your family protected all season.

Getting Your Camper Ready for a Safe & Healthy Summer 🏕️

Summer camp is one of the best parts of childhood — new friendships, outdoor adventures, and unforgettable memories. But with all that close contact between kids, staying on top of vaccinations is one of the simplest ways to keep your child (and their bunkmates!) healthy all season.

Here's what we recommend checking off before camp starts:
🔹 MMR – protects against measles, mumps & rubella, which spread fast in group settings
🔹 Tdap – covers tetanus (from cuts/scrapes), diphtheria & whooping cough
🔹 Varicella – chickenpox is still highly contagious and can hit hard
🔹 Meningococcal – protection against serious bacterial meningitis
🔹 Flu shot – yes, even in summer, it's worth considering

A few other easy wins before drop-off day:
📋 Update your child's health history for the camp
🧼 Review handwashing & hygiene habits together
🩺 Book a check-up to confirm everything's current

At Destinations Travel and Immunization Clinic, we make it easy to get your child camp-ready — vaccines, health advice, and answers to all your questions, all in one visit.

👉 Book your child's appointment today and start the summer off right: https://healthytrip.ca/services/travel-consultations/

Here's to a fun, safe, and healthy summer for every camper! 🌞💚
