Community Voices | Black Immigrants Thrive Coalition
Today at the 2026 Afro-Caribbean Thrive Conference at the Desmarais Building, University of Ottawa, Executive Director at the AIDS Committee of Ottawa(ACO), Khaled Salam spoke about the disproportionate impact of HIV on African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities and the systemic barriers that continue to drive these inequities.
His message was clear: representation matters. People are more likely to access services when they see themselves reflected in the organizations that serve them. From dedicated funding for ACB-led initiatives to greater representation on boards, in management, and in leadership roles, lasting change happens when communities are empowered to lead.
To address HIV inequities, we must invest in ACB communities, amplify ACB voices, and create pathways to decision-making spaces.

On Oct 1st, we gathered at the AIDS Committee of Ottawa in the spirit of 🧡 Truth and Reconciliation to listen, learn, and build relationships. Through Elder teachings, beading, smudging kit making, Indigenous vendors, drumming, food, and community connection, we witnessed the power of culture, trust, and belonging.
We were deeply humbled by the incredible turnout and support from the community. As an organization committed to health equity, today’s event reminded us that meaningful reconciliation begins with intention and continues through action, accountability, and partnership.
Honouring the past. Building bridges for the future. Together, we continue working toward equitable HIV and STBBI prevention, care, and support for Indigenous communities.
With gratitude to the Elders, Knowledge Keepers, vendors, volunteers, partners, and community members who made this day possible. Last but not the least, thank you, Austin, invincible_vr10 for your amazing support!
