Want to age well? Start with what you do every single day.
In this reel, Dr. Nathalie shares 3 of her favourite healthy-aging habits. Here’s a deeper dive into why they matter and how you can start incorporating them into your routine.
💧 1. CELLULAR HYDRATION
We often think hydration simply means drinking more water, but there’s more to it than that.
Your body depends on water and electrolytes to support normal muscle contractions, nerve signalling, temperature regulation, circulation, and many other everyday functions.
A few simple hydration habits:
✔️ Start your day with water after going several hours without fluids overnight
✔️ Sip consistently throughout the day rather than trying to catch up at night
✔️ Remember that your hydration needs may increase with exercise, hot weather, sweating, travel, or sauna use
✔️ Get minerals and electrolytes through a balanced diet, and consider additional electrolytes when your activity and sweat losses warrant them
✔️ Pay attention to your body. Thirst, dark urine, headaches, fatigue, and dry mouth can all be signs that you may need more fluids
Hydration may sound basic, but sometimes the basics are the most powerful habits to get right.
🧘 2. SPINAL MOBILITY
There’s a saying we love: motion is lotion.
Your spine is designed to move, and maintaining mobility becomes increasingly important as we get older.
Think about how much of modern life involves sitting: at a desk, in the car, looking at a phone, watching TV. Over time, less movement can contribute to stiffness and make everyday activities feel more difficult.
Maintaining spinal mobility can support your ability to bend, rotate, reach, exercise, and comfortably perform the activities you enjoy.
Try:
✔️ Breaking up long periods of sitting
✔️ Incorporating gentle spinal mobility throughout your day
✔️ Strength training regularly
✔️ Working on posture and ergonomics
✔️ Walking daily
✔️ Addressing persistent pain or stiffness instead of simply accepting it as “part of getting older”
At Santé, we want people thinking beyond getting out of pain. The bigger goal is maintaining movement and function so you can continue doing the things you love for years to come.
😴 3. SLEEP OPTIMIZATION
Sleep might be one of the most underrated healthy-aging tools we have.
Quality sleep supports physical recovery, cognitive function, mood, immune function, and metabolic health. And while we love technology and tracking, improving sleep doesn’t necessarily require another gadget.
Start with the fundamentals:
✔️ Keep your bedtime and wake time as consistent as possible
✔️ Get natural light in the morning to help reinforce your circadian rhythm
✔️ Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet
✔️ Reduce bright light and stimulating activities close to bedtime
✔️ Be mindful of caffeine later in the day
✔️ Create a relaxing evening routine that signals to your body that it’s time to wind down
And remember, spending eight hours in bed doesn’t automatically mean you’re getting eight hours of quality sleep. How rested and recovered you feel matters too.
The biggest biohack? Consistency.
You don’t need to completely overhaul your life overnight.
Healthy aging isn’t only about living longer. It’s about protecting your healthspan so you can stay mobile, capable, strong, and independent as you move through your 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and beyond. 💙
Which of these three could use a little more attention in your routine?
