Meet one of the dedicated nurse leaders contributing to CAPWHN’s Advocacy and Health Policy Committee! Through her leadership, passion, and commitment to nursing advocacy, Dr. Jodie Bigalky is helping strengthen the voice of perinatal and women’s health nurses and advance meaningful, evidence-informed change across Canada.

Here’s what she has to say about her work with the committee:

“As Co-Chair of the Advocacy and Health Policy Committee, I am proud to work alongside dedicated nurses committed to advancing policies and practices that support the health of perinatal people, women, gender-diverse individuals, and families across Canada.

Our committee identifies emerging issues in perinatal and women’s health, develops position statements, fosters partnerships, and advocates for evidence-informed policies that strengthen care and improve health outcomes. Recent work includes our Trauma- and Violence-Informed Care position statement—watch for its release soon! We are also exploring advocacy priorities related to reproductive health, perinatal mental health, perinatal loss, and substance use in pregnancy.

If you are aware of an emerging advocacy priority or health policy topic our committee should explore, please reach out!

I became involved because I strongly believe in CAPWHN’s role as a national voice for perinatal and women’s health nursing. ✨ Tina Bitangco l- Mama Nurse Tina
Shift Happens: Nurse Burnout, Humour, and the Power of Online Connection

Tina Bitangcol is a labour and delivery nurse, stand-up comedian, mother of four, and digital creator based in Edmonton, Alberta. Known online as “Mama Nurse Tina,” she has built a loyal audience by combining evidence-based women’s health education with humour, honesty, and relatable storytelling.

Drawing from both her clinical and lived experience, Tina focuses on creating approachable, empowering, and accessible conversations around pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and motherhood while fostering safe and supportive online spaces for women and families.

✨ Dr. Kellie Thiessen
From System Strain to System Healing: A Restorative Leadership Approach to Workforce and Learning Systems Environments

Dr. Kellie Thiessen is an Associate Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba. Her extensive leadership experience spans nursing and midwifery education, health workforce planning, and health systems leadership across Canada and internationally.

Her work has focused on advancing sustainable and restorative approaches to workforce and learning environments, particularly within rural, remote, and Indigenous communities, while advocating for innovative approaches to health system and educational redesign.

We look forward to welcoming these inspiring speakers to Calgary and sharing additional conference updates in the coming months.

CAPWHN is pleased to announce another keynote session at the 2026 National Conference.

🌟 Navigating the ‘Eat, Sleep, Console’ Model for Families and Caregivers 🌟

Join Jen Rinaldi and Madison Friesen for an engaging keynote that explores the implementation of the Eat, Sleep, Console model through clinical, educational, and socio-legal perspectives. Together, they will examine how healthcare systems can better support infants, families, and caregivers while promoting evidence-informed, relationship-based care.

Jen Rinaldi is an Associate Professor in Legal Studies at Ontario Tech University whose research focuses on institutional and carceral violence, disability, and perinatal care systems. As principal investigator of the SSHRC-funded project Do No Harm: Towards the Abolition of Carceral Forms of Perinatal Clinical Care, she brings a critical lens to understanding how healthcare systems impact families and communities.

Madison Friesen is a Perinatal Educator at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia with extensive clinical experience in perinatal and neonatal nursing. Her research interests include rural perinatal care sustainability, the experiences of perinatal nurses, and perinatal substance use disorder, including Eat, Sleep, Console care.

This keynote will offer valuable insights for nurses, educators, leaders, and healthcare professionals committed to advancing equitable, family-centred care in perinatal and neonatal settings.

Dr. Thiessen is the Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba and an internationally respected researcher, educator, clinician, and leader.
