Meet handsome Leonidas! He is an 18-week-old Abyssinian kitten who ingested some ibuprofen, which is toxic for cats. Although he was not exhibiting any clinical signs when he arrived, due to the possibility of stomach ulceration or kidney damage the Pet Poison Helpline recommended hospitalization and supportive care. We are delighted to report that he is home and doing well. If you are ever concerned that your pet may have eaten something toxic this helpline is a very valuable resource!

Meet Stanley! He is an eight-year-old male neutered Potcake who presented with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and a painful abdomen. He was diagnosed with acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS) and hospitalized for treatment. He made a good recovery and is happily ensconced back home getting lots of TLC!

Meet Poutine, a four-year-old boxer cross who came in after ingesting a toxic amount of allergy medication. She developed aspiration pneumonia and had to spend quite a while with us. Happily she is now home and we wish her a continued smooth recovery. What a sweetie!

This morning we found eleven kittens of varying ages abandoned by a dumpster in the parking lot in a box marked "kittens." Our staff immediately brought them in, and they have been fed and are now having baths. A pretty cute bunch!

XYLITOL TOXICITY: What You Need to Know

We see cases of Xylitol toxicity far too often. Xylitol is a sweetener that is safe for humans but extremely toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can cause a life-threatening drop in blood sugar or liver failure, and it usually starts with something as simple as a dog raiding a pack of sugar-free chewing gum.

Common sources of Xylitol include:
❎Sugar-free gum & breath mints
❎Certain diet peanut butters
❎Sugar-free baked goods
❎Some toothpastes and mouthwashes

So check your labels, and store these items out of reach. If your dog ingests Xylitol, every minute counts. Give us a call right away.

Did you know that OAESH works with bylaw to take care of injured and orphaned wildlife? Here are a few of our recent visitors. We also work with the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre to save injured turtles and to try to save endangered snapping turtle eggs that they may be able to incubate.
