Senior exotic pet care - did you know that we can help our exotic pets as they age to keep them comfortable? The age at which our exotic pets are considered seniors will depend on the species and their expected lifespan.
Some of the recommendations to keep your seniors living their best life include:
* Regular exams: we will recommend exams every 3-6 months depending on the patient and depending on the patient will recommend regular blood work or f***l tests so we can monitor how their organs are doing (some patients are too small and make sample collection not feasible).
*Changing their enclosure: ensuring they are able to move around comfortably, in some cases that means lowering perches, padding surfaces, eliminating areas to climb if their mobility is reduced.
*Change food items and how it is offered: some patients might require softer food, smaller food items and ensuring they are within reach
*Change food items and how it is offered: some patients might require softer food, smaller food items and ensuring they are within reach.
*Supplements/medications: if they are dealing with any medical issues such as kidney disease, liver disease, advanced arthritis to name a few, we can certainly prescribe some supplements and medications to ensure they are maintaining a good quality of life.
*Rehabilitation: to help keep our seniors mobile we might integrate other modalities, such as massage, laser therapy and specific exercises.
*** While there are many options, each pet is an individual and your vet would help you come up with a plan that is safe for your pet. Never start a pet on any supplements or medications without consulting with the guidance of your vet.
Highlighted in the picture is Ricki a senior veiled chameleon who is almost 8 years old. Veiled chameleons in captivity live up to 8 years (some even 10 years), so Ricki is quite the senior. His owner has provided excellent husbandry to Ricki over the years, catches any issues early and brings him for his regular check-ups! We love seeing our seniors doing so well.
