AI is already cutting MRI scan times, reducing administrative burden and helping hospitals deliver care in patients’ homes. Now Canada must take these successes to scale.

That means giving hospitals and health systems the secure, connected digital infrastructure needed to adopt and sustain new technologies.

Sustainable AI adoption starts with strong digital infrastructure.

Canada is investing in AI for healthcare. Now we need to invest in the health systems expected to put it to work.

Digital infrastructure costs have increased two to four times, yet the new $5-billion Health Infrastructure Fund does not address digital needs.

Sustainable AI adoption starts with strong digital infrastructure.

Healthcare workers are increasingly facing anger, hostility, and threats on the job.

As a result, Alberta Health Services now joins multiple healthcare organizations across the country installing AI-weapons detection screening systems in emergency departments to keep their staff and providers safe from violence.

But hospitals cannot fix this problem alone. The federal government can stand behind health workers and pass this fall session.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, HealthCareCAN honours residential school survivors, the children who never returned home, their families and communities.

Indian Residential Schools operated in Canada for well over 100 years and separated Indigenous children from their families and communities, and forbid them from their language, culture, and traditions. We acknowledge the harms and lingering impact of the residential school system, colonization, and anti-Indigenous racism.

HealthCareCAN members are committed to the journey of truth and reconciliation and providing culturally safe care to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, as called for in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s health-related Calls to Action.

Some of the meaningful ways hospitals are seeking to rebuild relationships with the Indigenous communities they serve and embed Indigenous knowledge into care delivery include establishing Indigenous Patient Navigators and Indigenous Health Teams, and providing access to smudging ceremony, traditional medicines, Elders, and inclusive healing spaces.

Today, we ask you to join us in taking the time to reflect, listen to survivors’ voices, and learn.

Personal support workers are essential healthcare workers. Canada’s immigration policies should recognize them that way.

HealthCareCAN’s submission to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada highlights the critical role PSWs play across home care, long-term care, community care and hospitals, and the opportunity to better align immigration policy with Canada’s health workforce needs.

Many PSWs are already living and working in Canada. Retaining these workers can help strengthen seniors’ care, support aging at home, improve hospital flow and build much-needed health system capacity.

We’re calling on the federal government to:

✔️ Create a dedicated health support worker immigration stream under Express Entry that explicitly includes PSWs.
✔️ Reclassify PSWs within NOC/TEER so they can access existing permanent residency pathways available to other healthcare workers.

Immigration policy is health workforce policy. Recognizing and retaining the essential workers already contributing to care is a practical step toward a stronger, more sustainable healthcare system.

Canada has the talent, research strength and public institutions to compete in health and life sciences.

But we need a stronger strategy to move innovation from discovery to commercialization to patient care.

Hospitals, health authorities and health research organizations must be core partners in that strategy. They are where discoveries are validated, clinical trials are run, technologies are adopted and Canadian companies can gain the evidence they need to scale.

Canada needs more healthcare workers, but we also need the clinical space to train them. Without enough capacity, expanding health professional education can only go so far.

We’re calling on the federal government to prioritize clinical training space and hospital-based simulation centres in health infrastructure investments, including in rural, remote and Northern communities.
