You may have heard of intra-oral massage—but what exactly is it?
Intra-oral massage is a specialized massage therapy technique where a Registered Massage Therapist uses gloves to gently treat the muscles inside the mouth that influence the jaw, face, head, and neck. These muscles are difficult to access externally, making intra-oral treatment an effective option for many people experiencing chronic jaw tension and pain.
Who is it for?
• TMJ dysfunction
• Jaw pain or clicking
• Teeth grinding (bruxism)
• Jaw clenching
• Chronic headaches and migraines
• Facial pain
• Limited jaw opening
• Neck tension related to the jaw
What are the benefits?
• Releases tension in deep jaw muscles
• Improves jaw mobility and function
• Helps reduce pain and muscle tightness
• May decrease headaches and facial pain
• Can relieve tension caused by clenching and grinding
• Complements external massage therapy for more comprehensive treatment
What can you expect?
Intra-oral massage is always performed with gloves and only with your informed consent. Your therapist will explain the technique beforehand, ensure you’re comfortable throughout treatment, and tailor the approach to your specific needs. While some areas may feel tender, treatment should never feel overwhelming, and communication is encouraged at all times.
Is it right for everyone?
Not necessarily. Intra-oral massage may not be appropriate if you have an active oral infection, open sores, recent dental or oral surgery, or certain other medical or dental conditions. Your therapist will complete an assessment and discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
Jaw pain isn’t something you have to live with. If you’re experiencing TMJ discomfort, headaches, clenching, or facial tension, we’d be happy to discuss whether intra-oral massage could be part of your treatment plan.
