Fall Farm Fest Open House is coming!
Tucked away in the peaceful greenery of Blackburn Hamlet, right on the edge of Orléans, you’ll find a little slice of calm you didn’t know you needed. Just Food — a local, community powered non profit — shares its beautiful farmland with the Greens Creek Donkey and Mule Sanctuary, a not for profit haven where gentle giants roam, heal, and charm absolutely everyone who visits.
The Sanctuary sprang to life from Erin’s deep connection with these intelligent, soulful animals. What began as a 10 year peer support program for Canada’s female military veterans blossomed into something extraordinary. In 2026, the Sanctuary shifted its mission to care for the very animals who had supported those veterans — offering donkeys and mules a forever home filled with safety, enrichment, and love. Their goal is simple and heartfelt: create a nurturing space for these remarkable domesticated animals, advocate for their well being, and welcome people of all ages to learn, connect, and enjoy their company.
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by Erin herself — and if you’re lucky, her energetic Rat Terrier puppy, Goose, will bounce over to say hello. Volunteers are often nearby too, ready to guide you, share stories, and introduce you to the stars of the Sanctuary: Neco the mule, and Rory and Bert, the donkeys. These three live lives at their own pace, enjoying a fear free environment where they’re cherished, well fed, and wonderfully expressive. You’ll also spot chickens and turkeys strutting proudly around the grounds and showcasing their beautiful colourings, adding to the farm’s lively charm.
Everyone is welcome here — families, individuals, and groups of all abilities. The Sanctuary is a safe, lush, bird filled oasis where therapy animals work their quiet magic. No two days are ever the same. During my visit, while chatting with Erin, I’m pretty sure a praying mantis even stopped by to eavesdrop.
There’s no cost to drop in and enjoy the farm life, though donations are always appreciated. Tax receipts are available for donations of $20 or more.
You’ll find the Sanctuary at 2391 Pépin Court, Blackburn Hamlet.
Visiting hours: • Fridays: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. • Weekends: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Open from May 1st to October 31st — winter visits available by request.
And here’s a tip: Neco, Bert, and Rory love cut up carrots and sliced apples. There will also be feed dispensers so bring those quarters.
