Before giving advice, try asking one simple question: “What would be most helpful right now?”

Sometimes someone wants to feel heard.

Sometimes they want help thinking through options.

Sometimes they want to make a decision together.

Communication can become frustrating when one person is looking for understanding while the other immediately moves into problem-solving.

A quick check-in can help both people understand what kind of conversation they’re actually having.

Try asking, “Would you like me to listen, help problem-solve, or decide this with you?”

Setting a boundary doesn’t have to mean shutting someone out.

A boundary can simply communicate what you are comfortable with, what you have capacity for, or what you need in order to stay engaged in a conversation or relationship.

Sometimes that sounds like:

“I can talk about this, but I need some time first.”

“I’m not available tonight, but I can help tomorrow.”

“If the conversation becomes disrespectful, I’m going to step away.”

You cannot control how another person responds. You can be clear about your own limits.

Save this for the next time you’re trying to communicate a limit with clarity and care.

“I don’t even know how to explain what’s going on.” That can still be a place to start.

You don’t need a perfectly organized story before coming to therapy.

Maybe something has been weighing on you. Maybe a pattern keeps repeating. Maybe you simply know that things don’t feel quite right.

Therapy can give you space to slow down, talk through what you’re noticing, and explore what feels important.

There is no perfect opening sentence required.

If you’ve been wondering where to begin, explore therapy options at clearpathpsychotherapy.online.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but a dysregulated nervous system will not appeal to logic. No amount of cognitive effort will coax it into regulation.

It's not that the mind isn't powerful – when a problem can be solved by intellect or will power, your mind is the best tool for the job.

But, if you've every tried to negotiate with anxiety or rationalize with a trauma response, you know there are limits to what your mind can do.

This is because there is SO much of your body that the thinking part of your brain has no control over. The part of your nervous system that's affected by (and creates physical responses to) stress, trauma, hormone imbalances and anxiety is one example.

The good news is, your body is also powerful – especially when it comes to regulating an overwhelmed nervous system.

To hear more about nervous system dysregulation and how somatic therapy helps your mind and body work together, check out this week's episode of Clear Path with Katrin Aslani.

Finding a therapist isn’t just about finding someone qualified. It’s also about finding someone you feel comfortable talking with.

A first conversation can be a chance to ask questions, learn how a therapist approaches their work, and get a sense of whether working together feels like the right fit for you.

You don’t need to know all the clinical terms or have everything figured out before reaching out. Bringing your questions is enough.

👉 Why calm can feel uncomfortable
👉 What's actually happening in your nervous system when you can't relax
