CAEP member Dr. IIitea Kina is developing SIENA (Sunnybrook Intelligent Emergency Nowcasting and Assessment), an AI-powered chatbot designed to help emergency physicians anticipate patient needs, improve workflow, and enhance the patient experience.

By collecting information while patients wait, SIENA aims to support faster, more informed clinical decision-making and reduce time spent in the emergency department.

🙌 A major investment in the future of emergency medicine research.

CAEP members Drs. Shelley McLeod, Bjug Borgundvaag and Catherine Varner are leading the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Medicine Institute (SREMI) in advancing emergency care in Canada and beyond.

Thanks to a transformative $15 million gift from philanthropists Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman, SREMI will expand research to address some of emergency medicine's most pressing challenges, including emergency department overcrowding, patient flow, care for older adults, mental health and substance use, and earlier diagnosis of serious illness.

What do summer ED closures say about Canada's health workforce?

They are a reminder that workforce pressures don't take time off. When staffing shortages, vacations, and rising patient volumes collide, already strained emergency departments have little room to adapt.

A recent Ontario Medical Association survey found that 74% of emergency physicians report critical or severe overcrowding, while three-quarters say it impacts their ability to deliver timely care on most or nearly every shift.

Burnout among Canadian emergency physicians remains alarmingly high.

A new longitudinal study published in CMAJ found that:
▪️ 65% of respondents reported high emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, or both.
▪️ Nearly half (48%) have reduced their clinical hours.
▪️ 1 in 10 have left emergency medicine altogether.

Researchers found that burnout is no longer a pandemic phenomenon. Emergency physicians describe working in a strained health care system, facing increasing patient volumes, staffing shortages, and challenges beyond the scope of emergency care.

Supporting the emergency medicine workforce means strengthening the health care system they work within.

“Emergency medicine is a humbling specialty.”

According to CAEP member Dr. Prince Asare-Agbo, no physician is perfect, and mistakes are part of the learning process. His advice: trust your clinical judgment, support your decisions with evidence, stay open to feedback, use every experience as an opportunity to grow.

About Dr. Asare-Agbo: He is a PGY-5 Emergency Medicine resident at the University of Ottawa. He obtained his medical degree at McMaster University, and prior to that completed an Honours Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree at Western University. He is also one of the current fellows in the Acute Care Point-of-Care Ultrasonography fellowship program in Ottawa. His clinical interests include point-of-care ultrasound, regional anesthesia, and toxicology. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing hockey, travelling, and analog photography.
