In this CTV Ottawa Your Morning interview, Katrin Spencer, Vice President, Strategy and Business Development at Perley Health, explains why families should begin these conversations earlier, starting with quality of life, caregiver capacity, and the supports that may be needed over time.

Justine asked us to share her message:

I've worn this uniform for many years.
It's not Figs, not Koi, not a name brand – but it's been with me through some of the hardest and most meaningful moments of my career.
It was there as I held hands when residents passed, and when I sat with families who just needed guidance, comfort, or someone to truly listen.
It stood beside me while supporting coworkers, teaching, mentoring, and preceptoring the next generation.
I also wore it at numerous Remembrance Day ceremonies to commemorate our Veterans – moments of reflection, gratitude, and respect that I will always carry with me.
This uniform became more than fabric – it carries memories of care, loss, compassion, and connection.
After 35 years in nursing, I'm hanging it up.
I'm proud of what I've done and the lives I've been honoured and privileged to touch.
Here's to the next chapter.
Justine

Because of your compassion, families at Perley Health are finding comfort, care, and closeness during life’s most difficult moments. 💙

Thanks to donor support, Comfort Care Carts and Comfort Care Chairs are helping families stay close to loved ones receiving end-of-life care.

The carts are stocked with thoughtful essentials like warm blankets, snacks, beverages, pillows, towels, and toothbrushes — small comforts that ease long hours at a resident’s bedside. Comfort Care Chairs gently fold out into beds so spouses, family members, and care partners can remain overnight in the same room.

“These small comforts make a world of difference,” says Samantha, a Psychogeriatric & Palliative Care Registered Nurse. “A blanket, warm drink, or a quick snack lets a family member or care partner stay close, and rest when they need to while still being present with their resident.”

Thank you for helping families focus on what matters most: being together. ❤️
