Why Might a Virtual Course Be the Right Choice for Your Family?
Every child learns differently—and every family’s schedule looks different too. That’s why Safety Tree Canada offers live virtual safety courses with an instructor.
A virtual course may be a great fit if:
⭐ Weekends are already packed with sports, activities and family commitments, making it difficult to find a full day for training.
⭐ Your child feels anxious in unfamiliar group settings and may be more comfortable participating from home.
⭐ Your child learns better in smaller chunks of time rather than completing a full-day course all at once.
⭐ Your child benefits from extra support and having a parent or support person nearby helps them feel confident and successful.
⭐ Your child has learning challenges and a familiar, comfortable environment helps them focus and participate.
⭐ Transportation is difficult or there simply isn’t an in-person course offered near your community.
Our virtual courses provide the same important safety education with a live instructor, while giving families another way to make training work for their child.

📱 There aren't enough privacy settings to completely prevent sextortion—but there are steps families can take to reduce the risk.

Talk with your child about never feeling pressured to share personal photos, being cautious when connecting with people online, and coming to a trusted adult if something doesn't feel right. Open conversations can make all the difference.

In an Emergency, Your iPhone Could Speak for You!

Most of us carry our phones everywhere. They contain our contacts, calendars, photos, and countless pieces of our daily lives. But there’s one feature many people overlook that could be incredibly valuable in an emergency: Medical ID.

As someone who works in safety education, I’m always looking for simple, practical steps families can take to be better prepared. Making sure your Medical ID is set up and current is one of them.

📱 What if someone finds your lost iPhone?

If someone finds an iPhone, they may be able to access the owner’s Medical ID without knowing the passcode, provided the owner has enabled “Show When Locked.”

From the emergency screen, a person may be able to view information the owner has chosen to share, including an emergency contact. That could provide a way to reach a family member and help reunite the phone with its owner.

More importantly, Medical ID can provide valuable information to first responders during an actual emergency.

❤️ What information should you include?

Take a few minutes to review your Medical ID and consider including:

* Emergency contacts
* Allergies and reactions
* Medical conditions
* Current medications
* Blood type, if known
* Any other information that would be important for someone helping you in an emergency

Parents should also consider checking the information on their children’s devices.

⚠️ One setting you don’t want to miss

Having a Medical ID isn’t enough if it can’t be accessed when your phone is locked.

On your iPhone, open:

Health → Profile Picture → Medical ID → Edit

Then make sure “Show When Locked” is turned on.

While you’re there, check that your emergency contacts and other information are still accurate. Phone numbers change, medications change, allergies are discovered, and we often forget to go back and update these details.

🌳 Safety doesn’t always have to be complicated

We often think about emergency preparedness as something that requires extensive planning. Sometimes it comes down to taking advantage of the safety tools we already have.

Take two minutes today to check your Medical ID — and encourage the people you care about to check theirs too.

It could help someone return a lost phone.

More importantly, it could help someone help you when you can’t speak for yourself.

🏡 What’s on your child’s before-school checklist when they’re home alone?

Mornings are a great opportunity for kids to practise independence and responsibility before heading off to school.

A simple routine might include:
⏰ Wake up on time
🛏️ Make the bed and get dressed
🪥 Brush teeth and hair
🥣 Eat breakfast and clean up
🎒 Check backpack, lunch and water bottle
🐶 Take care of pets, if needed
🔒 Make sure doors are locked
💡 Turn off lights and appliances
📱 Check in with a parent
🧥 Dress for the weather
🏫 Leave on time and follow the family's safe route to school

But what happens if they miss the bus, someone knocks at the door, they can't find their key, or an emergency happens?
Our Home Alone Safety for Kids Course helps children learn the skills they need to feel safe, confident and prepared when they're home without an adult.
