I miss my late son Evan (1989-2007) coming in the back door, throwing his keys on the counter, and saying "hey mom." I miss him sitting in the big chair in my bedroom, telling me about his day while I folded laundry. I miss shopping at thrift stores with him. I miss his dry sense of humor. What do you miss about your lost loved one?

Have you felt that some events or moments are more than coincidences?

Do you think the Universe gives us nudges? I’ve had some absolute life-changing ‘coincidences’ that I can only see as ‘meant to be’ moments, some that are so incredible that nobody would believe them.

Do you believe in fate or nudges from the Universe or a higher power?

Let me know what you think!

Grief is about loss and that doesn’t have to mean a death. In this video I talk about what I grieved after the birth of my daughter.

You can still feel grief at the same time you feel gratitude.

In this video I read about grief and mourning from Alan D. Wolfelt’s book “Complicated Grief”

In the next video I expand a little with an example from my own life.

Another beautiful poem by James Crews!!

How can you embrace your grief and let it speak?
Honouring your grief is honouring yourself and your loved one.

This is an incredible book that describes the emotions that live within grief very well. Too often children (and adults!) are left thinking that grief equals sadness and then are totally unprepared for the other feelings that come along.

I highly recommend this book by Holly Thompson!

“One Wave at a Time” by Holly Thompson is a wonderful book about parent loss. In the book, a young boy’s father dies and we see how the death affects not just him, but also his mother and younger brother.

Thompson describes the feelings as waves; of sadness, of anger, of fear and even of happiness. She does an excellent job of describing these waves and the illustrations by Ashley Crowley really bring the feelings to life.

At the beginning of the story, Kai talks about the places where his father USED to be, like at the dinner table, on the sidelines of his soccer games or waiting with him for the school bus and Crowley shows those places with a vague shadow within the picture, to represent the father. A very subtle part of the picture, in fact I didn’t even notice it the first time I read the book!

The family goes to a support group where they can meet other families travelling the same journey and this helps the family start their healing.

It is a beautiful book and describes the different ways that grief can show up simply, sensitively and honestly.

It is wonderful to show up and support someone in their grief, it is even better to let them lead.

Someone might want to sit in silence or to cry or to talk about their person. Or maybe they want to have a visit where they are treated like a “normal” person and talk about the weather, a new movie or what’s happening in the news.

Show up for them and be prepared to follow their lead.
