Looking for tips on how to get your bowels moving?

Get into a regular habit:
- Bowels respond the best to a regular habit – they sleep at night and are active during the day. Eating, drinking, walking, and regular movement stimulates the bowels. Do not ignore the urge to move your bowels. It is an important reflex to pay attention to.

Do not skip breakfast
- Enjoy a high-fibre breakfast including a hot drink like coffee, tea, or hot water and lemon.

Sit properly
- The bowels were meant to move in a squatting position. You can simulate a semi-squat by using a small footstool (8-12
inches) and rest your feet flat on the stool. Do not perch on the edge of the toilet with your toes on the ground. Keep knees
and feet apart. Lean forward and rest your elbows on your thighs. Relax.

Breathe:
- Do not hold your breath when trying to move your bowels. If you hold your breath and push, this is STRAINING! Consider blowing out through a closed fist, humming, talking, or using short bursts of air to help move the bowels if you feel the need to push a little.

Pushing without straining:
- Make your abdominal muscles bulge outward or make your waist wide. Use this movement to assist the re**um in
pushing the bowel movement down and out.

Relaxing the pelvic floor:
- Many people with constipation or bowel dysfunction actually tighten the pelvic floor rather than relax the pelvic floor.
This is like squeezing a tube of toothpaste with the lid on! To relax these muscles, squeeze gently around the a**s and
then relax by dropping the a**s towards the water in the bowl. Repeat several times before proceeding to move your
bowels.
