Support for betrayal trauma and childhood wounds — relational trauma that can affect trust, self-worth, closeness, and emotional steadiness long after the hurt happened.

"Infidelity is often referred to as an attachment injury." That's not a metaphor — it's how our founder, Stephanie Boucher, explained it to Newsweek. The bond you trusted breaks, and your nervous system doesn't just feel hurt. It goes into trauma mode. That's why "just talk it out" rarely works on its own — this isn't a conversation problem, it's a safety problem.

After being hurt by someone you trusted, it can make sense if trusting again feels impossible.

In this Between Sessions feature, Chelsea Davis shares a gentle way of looking at the protective part of you — not as something broken, but as something that may be trying to keep you safe.

In therapy, we can begin to understand where that protective part came from, how it has helped you survive, and what it may need now in order to feel safe enough to trust again.

New issue of The Messy Loft is out!
This one's for anyone who's ever thought, "I know exactly why I do this… so why do I keep doing it?" Turns out understanding and changing aren't the same thing... they don't even live in the same part of the brain.

This month, I unpack that gap, with a little help from a Bridesmaids (movie) scene.

Three years of doing this work and the thing that stays with us most is this:

Most people don't come in talking about betrayal. They come in saying they feel off. That they're struggling to trust people. That they overthink everything now.

And, eventually, slowly it comes out: a partner who lied, a parent who let them down in a big way, a friendship that turned out to be something else entirely.

Betrayal trauma doesn't always look dramatic. Sometimes it just looks like someone who stopped trusting themselves.

If that's you, or someone you love, we're here.

Gratitude and positive affirmations aren’t the problem. Using them to shut yourself down is.

A lot of people learned early on to stay calm, not make things a big deal, and not be difficult. So when something feels off, you talk yourself out of it: “It’s fine. They didn’t mean it. I’m choosing positivity. I’m not going to let this affect me.”

And just like that, it’s gone. Not because it didn’t matter, but because you didn’t let it.

You can appreciate someone and still feel hurt by them. Both can be true. This is the work we do.

You don’t say anything. You tell yourself it’s not a big deal, make excuses for them, and focus on the good.

And just like that, you’re not even frustrated anymore!
Not because it didn’t matter, but because you used gratitude to shut it down.

You can be grateful and still feel something wasn’t okay. They can co exist.

This isn’t about gratitude being wrong, it’s about how you use it against yourself.

Most people who come to therapy are not falling apart.
They’re functioning. Working. In relationships. Life looks mostly fine from the outside.
They just know something isn’t sitting right anymore, and they want to understand it instead of pushing it aside.

What I Can Control vs. What I Can’t
A lot of stress comes from trying to manage things that were never ours to control in the first place. Other people’s reactions, their choices, their opinions, the past.
What is ours is quieter but more powerful: our boundaries, our responses, where we place our energy, and how we care for ourselves.
When we shift our attention back to what actually belongs to us, things often start to feel clearer.
Sometimes the most important question is simply: What is actually mine to carry here?

Intent may explain what they meant, but impact reveals what it did to you. You can understand someone’s motives and still acknowledge that it affected you. You don’t need proof of bad intent to take your experience seriously.

If you find yourself constantly translating their intentions while minimizing your own experience, pause. Clarity begins when you stop debating what they meant and start naming what it cost you.
