The thymus is where immature T cells undergo selection—a crucial process that shapes the adaptive immune system.
Inside the thymus, developing T cells are tested for their ability to recognize self-MHC and are screened for dangerously strong reactions against the body’s own tissues. Cells that fail these selection processes are eliminated, while suitable cells mature into functional T lymphocytes.
Thymic activity is greatest during childhood and gradually declines after puberty as functional thymic tissue is replaced increasingly by adipose tissue.
A temporary organ with a permanent impact on immune tolerance.
