Your core is more than your abs.
We often think of the core as just the muscles at the front of the abdomen, but your core is actually a three-dimensional system that wraps around your entire trunk.
Your obliques run along the sides of your abdomen and help control rotation and side bending. Deeper muscles like the transverse abdominis help stabilize your trunk and pelvis.
Then there’s the quadratus lumborum, or QL, a deeper muscle in the back of the waist. It plays a role in controlling side bending and stabilizing the pelvis and spine.
Together, these muscles help control the relationship between your rib cage and pelvis, particularly when your body is being challenged to move or stabilize laterally.
When you ride, if you tend to collapse through one side of your waist, drop your shoulders or struggle to stay centered, your core and side body are worth paying attention to.
As riders, we need a core that can stabilize us while still allowing us to move with the horse.
