Human health is intimately linked to the ecology and diversity of the human microbiome. Together, the human organism and the human microbiome work as a complex super-organism throughout the human life cycle.

Microbiome science provides direct evidence and substantiation of the fundamental principles of homeopathy, including holism, psychosomatics, direction of cure, the Law of Similars, individuality and susceptibility, minimum dose, and homeostasis.

Whilst many conventional (allopathic) medical treatments irreversibly damage the ecology of the microbiome and trigger chronic immune dysfunction and inflammation, the future sustainability of the entire field of medicine depends on the ability to recognize these inconvenient biological truths and to embrace a safer approach based on this evidence.

Fortunately, one of the oldest forms of clinically verifiable, evidence-based, and ecologically sustainable medicine, that does not harm the microbiome, already exists in the form of homeopathy.

Another wonderful case from Dr. Adolph Lippe's patient files...

"Mrs. C., aged 50 years, came under my care May 12, 1871. Had been under the care of different physicians and had grown so much worse that her family despaired of her recovery, and, as a last resort, wished to try homœopathy.

Mrs. C. was married at the age of 16 years, had four children when 20 years old, suffered them from various uterine affections, had no more children, and recovered her health again; was an active housekeeper and overexerted herself very much. For years she had complained of pains in the region of the right kidney, and of palpitation of the heart when taking much exercise. The urinary discharges had gradually increased very much, and I found her very weak. She had for the last fortnight not only passed large quantities of albuminous urine every hour, and, when exercising, every quarter of an hour, but the urine was now flowing continuously, obliging her to lie down on large quantities of sheets; in the last few days these involuntary discharges had become bloody at times. Pulse about 50 feeble beats in a minute; breathing short and rapid, never under 40 inhalations per minute. She perspired freely when moving about; much thirst for cold drinks; no appetite. Has not slept for weeks, and becomes very restless after midnight; this restlessness drives her out of bed, and, too weak to walk, she goes from chair to chair and tries to find an easy position. The pain in her right kidney, extending to the bladder, has become very violent, and is worse after midnight. Bowels constipated.

A selection of the truly curative homœopathic remedy was very easy; there could be no doubt but degeneration of the right kidney was progressing, and all the urinary symptoms combined would indicate a multiplicity of remedies; but the characteristic symptom of the patient was an increase of pain in the right kidney and great restlessness, driving her from place to place after midnight. The time of the aggravation, and the species of restlessness from which she suffered, were also characteristic of Arsenicum album. And, as Arsenicum album also corresponded with the majority of the symptoms of the patient, she received a few pellets of Arsenicum album 10 M (Fincke), on her tongue.

The following night she remained in bed, the restlessness had ceased and she had slept better; the involuntary discharges of urine ceased. The second day after taking the Arsenicum album the urinary discharges diminished very considerably. The pain in her right kidney gradually diminished. On the 7th day she had three watery discharges from the bowels; her pulse then became fuller and more frequent, her breathing became normal; later her strength returned, she had a good appetite, slept well, and on the 20th of June had nothing more to complain of. She resumed her ordinary household duties, and is well at this writing, the 4th of July.

This case is one of the great triumphs of homœopathy, as taught and promulgated by its founder, Hahnemann. The remedy for the cure of the patient was chosen, according to his teachings; the totality of symptoms were the guide; neither the locality of the disease nor the name of the disorder could point out the curative agent. The effect of the homœopathically chosen remedy, administered in a highly potentized form, was allowed to exhaust its effects, and the result was a full recovery of the much suffering patient."

A Conversation That Lasted Until 4 A.M.

In 1843, a young physician named P.P. Wells was searching for a deeper understanding of homeopathy.

That search led him to one of the most important figures in its history: Constantine Hering, MD.

Wells arrived at Hering's office with a letter of introduction. What happened next became part of homeopathic history.

According to historical accounts, Hering turned the key to his office door, stopped seeing patients for the rest of the day, and sat down to talk with Wells.

They talked until four o'clock the next morning.

For Wells, the conversation appears to have been transformative. He had been studying homeopathy and searching for answers. In Hering, he found a physician who could help him understand the principles and practice he was seeking.

Wells went on to become one of America's prominent Hahnemannian homeopathic physicians, dedicating much of his life to the careful study and teaching of homeopathy.

Epidemics That Changed Medicine: Typhoid Fever, 1843

Long before antibiotics, typhoid fever was a dangerous and often deadly disease. In the 19th century, outbreaks were common in communities where contaminated food and water allowed the infection to spread.

In 1843, Dr. Carl Heinrich Rosenberg published a collection of typhoid fever outcomes from allopathic and homeopathic hospitals in major European cities.
The numbers he reported were striking:

Allopathic hospitals
• 27,175 cases
• 14,014 deaths
• 51.57% mortality

Homeopathic hospitals
• 618 cases
• 99 deaths
• 16.02% mortality

These weren't the observations of a single physician treating a handful of patients. Rosenberg was bringing together hospital records involving more than 27,000 conventionally treated patients and hundreds treated homeopathically.
The figures offer another fascinating window into how physicians of the era were beginning to use statistics to compare medical outcomes, decades before modern clinical trials became the standard.

Severe hearing impairment has a significant impact on children’s safety, ability to learn, socialise, and subsequently earn a living, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where there is little conventional treatment, and rates are greater than high-income countries and growing.

Given these facts, researchers recently completed a pilot study to assess the feasibility of conducting a fully powered study of the effectiveness of homeopathic treatment for children with severe hearing impairment.

Results:
Forty-one children with impaired hearing and parental approval received homeopathic treatment for up to nine months and completed baseline and nine-month tests, but eight were unable to comply with audiology testing due to learning difficulties. Hearing improved in 73 %, with nine students (39 %) registering changes at several frequencies, corroborated by student and teacher reports and/or voice/speech tests. Some modification of the trial design is needed: prolonged school absences require treatment and testing flexibility; audiology testing challenges necessitate use of and comparison with other outcomes.

Conclusions
To build on these results, robust, larger-scale studies incorporating randomization (possibly at the school level), a comparator (no treatment), and blinding (of outcome assessment) are now needed. Measurement of change in important real-life aspects such as injury incidence, academic ability, and quality of life are recommended.

A wonderful case from Dr. Adolph Lippe's case files...

"Miss. H., 18 years old, was visited June 4th. She had taken a walk on the previous evening, and returning home at 10 P.M., seated herself at an open window for an hour. She retired, feeling perfectly well; was suffering from slight pain in her chest, which increased rapidly.

I saw her at 2:30 P.M. Stitches in the right side of the chest, through the lungs in different directions, very violent at times, causing her to cry out; in the last half hour the pain had extended to left upper part of the chest. The least motion causes much pain; breathing very short and rapid, as every effort to draw a long breath causes great (stinging, pricking) pain in the chest. Slight pain in the forehead. She is restless, wants to change her position all the time, although the movement of her body very much increases the pain. Pulse normal, very little thirst, skin dry, face flushed.

Gave her a dose of Aconite 50 M (Fincke) on the tongue. Saw her again at 8 P.M. and received the following statement: Very soon after taking the medicine, she fell asleep; slept very quietly for an hour; awoke feeling better, and was cheerful; the skin had become slightly moist. She remained quietly in her bed, took no food, and, without any assignable cause, the pain in her chest had returned about 6 o’clock, and by 8 P.M. was much more distressing than it had been before she took the Aconite.

She was exceedingly restless, cried out with pains; the skin had become very dry again; the pain had not extended any further on the left side of the chest. I now dissolved 6 pellets of the same preparation of Aconite in half a tumblerful of water and gave her one teaspoonful, ordered the medicine to be repeated (a teaspoonful at a time); every two hours, till she was relieved.

On my visit in the morning following, I learned than after the first teaspoonful of this Aconite solution the patient had very soon gone to sleep, and took no more medicine; slept till midnight; awoke in a profuse warm perpspiration, and soon fell asleep again; awoke at 7 A.M. free from pain; could draw a long breath, and took a very good breakfast. She remained perfectly well afterwards.

This young lady had been attacked during the last two years with pleurisy, congestion of the lungs, and had had one very severe attack of pneumonia; was then treated here by a homœopathic physician of great distinction. On account of the previous attacks of diseases of the lungs, the case was more alarming than it would have been otherwise. The first dose of Aconite had certainly caused a very short improvement; this first improvement had ceased, and now came the perplexing question, what next?

There could be no doubt that Aconite was the true homœopathic remedy, and had, of course, to be given again. If the first dose given dry on the tongue had only caused so short an improvement, much could not be reasonably expected from a second dose administered in the same manner. To go down to the Tincture was out of the question, as long experience and observation of this mode of administering Aconite by other physicians had fully convinced me that Aconite at least should under no condition be administered in its crude tincture. The only alternative was the solution of the remedy in water, and the result was a very happy one.

It is very well for men of distinction and liberality to demand the greatest freedom with regard to the dose; just as long as we have no practical rules to guide us in the selection of the dose or the repetition of the remedy, such demands are in order; but it does not follow that we should forever be deprived of such practical rules in relation to the doses, as could be deductions from facts only, be collected for that purpose.

Assertions amount to nothing at all; we must have facts, and logic will do the rest. And it is time that the oft-repeated invitation to the profession to publish, in the many journals devoted to our cause, well related cases, in which one mode of administering the clearly indicated remedy in a given dose has failed, and then has been successfully administered afterwards in a different dose or in a different manner. There is a solution to all perplexing questions. Let us ask nature; let us collect facts, and we will learn all we want to know."

An anecdote from Dr. Adolph Lippe:

"Phosphorus and the Washerwomen.—Before the year 1840 there were assembled at the Academy at Allentown, Pennsylvania, the pupils of the late Dr. William Wesselhœft, to make their clinical reports. Dr. Wesselhœft not only taught his pupils Materia Medica, &c., but he gave them actual cases; on these cases they had to report, and these reports opened a large field for instruction, showing the practical applicability of our healing art. It was during one of these evening instructions that the late Dr. Gosewich had to report on a case of toothache of a washerwoman. It appeared that washing always increased or provoked it. Dr. Wesselhœft could not see it in the same light that Dr. Gosewich had seen it, and began a severe criticism of this prescription. After he had finished his not very flattering remarks, the late Dr. Gosewich arose and flung down on the table from his pockets several closely-written sheets of paper, and began earnestly to plead his case. He had evidently given the case hours of study, and his comparisons were exhaustive. After he had finished his defense, he wound up by saying that he was as confident of the speedy cure of the present toothache as he was that the washerwoman would have no toothache next wash-day. And he was right, Phosphorus, ever since, has been the principal, if not the specific, remedy for the toothache of washerwomen."

Critically important advice from Dr. Adolph Lippe...

"In each individual case, and for every change of symptoms in each case, the remedy must be selected carefully; no precedents can ever guide us, because there never can, or will, be two cases exactly alike."

Epidemics That Changed Medicine: Measles in Germany, 1831

In the spring of 1831, a severe epidemic of malignant measles struck the community of Oberhörgern, Germany.

These were not simply mild childhood cases. Historical accounts described children suffering from vomiting, diphtheria, typhoid-like symptoms, severe eye infections and pneumonia.

Among children who received no treatment, the reported mortality was 25%.

During the same epidemic, homeopathic physician Dr. Georg A. Weber of Lich treated 87 children homeopathically.

His reported results:

• 87 children treated
• 0 deaths
• 100% survived

The results attracted attention, but what happened afterward is also a fascinating part of the history.

According to the historical account, opposition from local apothecaries contributed to enforcement of restrictions preventing homeopathic physicians from dispensing their own medicines. Dr. Weber was later fined for providing medicines to his patients free of charge. The controversy ultimately prompted 1,300 families in the region to petition authorities to remove the restriction.

Epidemics That Changed Medicine: Yellow Fever in Natchez, 1853

In 1853, yellow fever struck Natchez, Mississippi, during one of the disease's devastating waves across the American South.

At the Mississippi State Hospital, the reported mortality among yellow fever patients treated conventionally was 55%.

At the same time, two homeopathic physicians in Natchez, Dr. Frederic Davis and Dr. William H. Holcombe, reported treating:

• 555 cases of yellow fever
• 33 deaths
• Mortality rate: 6%

What happened afterward may be just as remarkable as the numbers themselves.

Following the epidemic, the trustees of the Mississippi State Hospital appointed Davis and Holcombe as physicians and surgeons of the hospital for 1854, explaining that they believed their decision was justified by the physicians' reported success treating yellow fever. Until then, the institution had been a long-established allopathic hospital.

The decision was noteworthy in that homeopathy was still fighting for acceptance within American medicine. The experience of the 1853 epidemic was significant enough to change who was entrusted with the care of patients at a state hospital.
