Gather & Cook – Youth Cooking Day! 🍴

Today at Gather & Cook, our young chefs made some delicious Calico Beans! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳
We had some fun making healthier substitutions along the way. Together, we made our own ketchup substitute using tomato paste, apple cider vinegar and honey. We also swapped out the brown sugar for maple syrup—a simple and delicious healthier option! 🍁

Families also received a watermelon to take home along with some light rye bread. 🍉🍞

Oh… and let’s not forget the hard-boiled eggs! 🥚 We learned how to make them, but thanks to an element change during the cooking process, they were still a little raw. 😂

So, what do you do with slightly undercooked eggs? Dissect them and throw them around, of course! At least Brooklyn was happy to enjoy those softer yolks! 😆

There was lots of laughter, jokes, learning and, of course, eating.

And then came the best part… everyone pitched in to clean up, and the kitchen looked like we were never even there!
Well… almost.
I did leave one burnt pot soaking for another day. 😂🤷‍♀️

A local agency offering food related classes. Elaine is great and she’ll be visiting M’Wikwedong for the Life Long Care and Wiisinadas Lunch and Learn this month.

Today we had the pleasure in visiting a local corn field, where we picked corn. We also enjoyed learning about how to blanch, cook, and learned some traditional information about corn.

The Ojibwe word for corn or a kernel of corn is mandaamin (pronounced man-daa-min) 🌽

We also enjoyed a snack after- fresh popped pop corn from on the stove. 😋 yum.

Today’s hike to Indian falls was a bit wet but we got there and back only dealt with 1 fall.

If you can… get out walking and take in the beauty that surrounds us in Grey and Bruce County.
