In my time as an equine massage therapist and horse owner, ive learned that the only true source of solid feedback on how effective your work with a horse is, comes from the horse.
Horses hide so much pain but they tell us so much. Learning their body language and behaviours is so important. Each horse is so unique. Like us they have big personalities and history. Some horses carry more trauma than others. Some horses carry more pain than others. In my experience, no one approach fits all.
A large part of being a massage therapist is being able to listen, read very small changes and adjust my approach quickly. Giving the horse a choice, demonstrating a good sensation and inviting the horse into more. This kind and gentle approach has worked for me in my work and in my own herd. Building trust with horses should always be the first step. Trust and understanding has to go both ways for an effective change whether it's behaviour,
training or body development.
