Why some people don’t fully heal from a concussion
Most recover in weeks. Others deal with lasting headaches, brain fog, fatigue, and mood issues for months.
One major reason? Neuroinflammation.
After injury, the brain’s immune cells (microglia) activate to help repair. When this response doesn’t fully shut off, chronic inflammation can linger — disrupting brain function even when scans look normal.
Research shows this ongoing inflammation can keep symptoms going long after the initial hit.
If you’re still struggling, help is available.

Been injured? Want to accelerate your healing? Let’s get you back! 💪

What you eat matters.
But WHEN you eat in relation to training and injury may matter just as much. ⏱️

Here’s your evidence-based guide to nutrient timing for recovery and tissue healing:
The post-exercise anabolic window
The first 30–60 minutes after training have elevated insulin sensitivity and muscle protein synthesis rates. Missing this window isn’t catastrophic, but optimizing it accelerates recovery.

Protein — the non-negotiable 🥩
• Athletes need 1.6–2.2g/kg body weight/day
• Per-meal target: 30–40g of high-quality protein (leucine threshold ~2–3g)
• Leucine-rich sources: chicken, beef, eggs, whey, Greek yogurt
• During injury: protein needs may increase as tissue synthesis is upregulated

Carbohydrates — the fuel for recovery 🍚
• 3:1 carb:protein ratio optimal in the 0–2h post-exercise window
• Glycogen replenishment takes 24–72h of adequate carbohydrate intake
• Don’t slash carbs when injured — energy availability affects healing rate

Anti-inflammatory nutrition 🐟
• Omega-3s (EPA/DHA): 2–3g/day
• Vitamin D: target 40–60 ng/mL
• Creatine monohydrate: 3–5g/day to help reduce muscle atrophy during immobilization
• Collagen + Vitamin C: ideal pre-session for tendon healing

Hydration 💧
Even 2% dehydration reduces strength by ~5–8% and impacts cognitive performance. Aim for pale yellow urine throughout the day.
Save this guide and put it into practice. ✅

“But my bloodwork was normal…” 👀

Tips from our Cobblestone Naturopath, Dr Wendy 💙
Dr. Wendy Pardiac, ND Dr. Ty Fletcher

Normal doesn’t always mean the test answered the question you were actually asking.

Some blood markers are incredibly useful for things like electrolyte balance, kidney function and detecting medical abnormalities, but they don’t necessarily tell us how much of a nutrient your body has stored.

That’s why when we’re investigating symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, hair changes or poor recovery, which labs we order matters just as much as the result.

More testing isn’t always better.
The right testing is 🤍

Weekly Motivation ☀️
Dr. Ty Fletcher

We never celebrate perfection.
We celebrate every step that once felt impossible.
The shaky first try.
The day you almost quit.
The quiet win no one else saw.
That’s real growth.
Not the flawless finish —
but the courage to keep going
when it felt too hard.
Stop waiting to feel ready.
Celebrate the version of you
who showed up anyway.
That’s the only kind of winning
that actually changes a life.

Did you know your brain has a real “volume knob” for pain?
Clarissa James - Chickadee

A recent study found a specific brain pathway that acts like a volume control. When your brain believes you’re in danger — from fear, past experiences, or the stories you keep telling yourself — it can literally turn the volume up on pain.
Not because the pain is imaginary.
Because your brain is trying to protect you.
Your nervous system is like the world’s most dedicated security guard.
It doesn’t wait until it knows something is dangerous.
It acts when it thinks it might be.
Sometimes that security guard deserves a raise…
…and sometimes it sees a squirrel and calls the entire SWAT team. 🐿️🚨
That’s nocebo.
When your brain repeatedly hears:
“My body is damaged.”
“This movement is going to hurt.”
“I’ll never get better.”
It starts treating those messages as evidence.
More pain. More tension. More fatigue.
All in the name of protection.
The good news?
Researchers were able to switch this pathway on and off in the lab.
When they turned it on → pain sensitivity went up.
When they blocked it → the nocebo response disappeared.
Your brain is always listening.
So instead of:
“I’m broken.”
“I can’t trust my body.”

Try offering it something more accurate and kind:
💛 “My body is trying to protect me.”
💛 “Pain doesn’t always mean damage.”
💛 “My nervous system can learn.”
Every time you practise these messages — and pair them with safe movement — you give your brain new evidence that you (and the world) are safer than it predicted.

Over time… the volume can turn back down.
We’re here to help you do exactly that.

🏌️ Fit Friday just dropped… and it’s for the golfers!
Connor (our Cobblestone exercise therapist & kinesiologist) is in the building with a little secret:
You don’t need a fancy new driver.
You need Thoracic Rotation Ball Throws 👀
Grab a medicine ball (or just use your bodyweight) and start rotating through those throws.
This move fires up your thoracic spine and helps you generate serious rotational power — aka more distance off the tee 💥
Watch Connor break it down, save it, and try it before your next round.
Then tag that one friend who still blames their clubs for every short drive 😂
Who’s ready to bomb it past their buddies this weekend? Drop a ⛳️ below!

Ears still ringing after a concussion?
Tips from Dr Tyler 🧠
You’re not broken… and you’re definitely not alone. 🛎️👂
That persistent buzz, hum, or high-pitched whistle is called tinnitus, and it’s one of the most common (and annoying) post-concussion symptoms. It can come from a few different places:
• Your inner ear taking a hit
• The brain’s auditory pathways getting temporarily scrambled
• Even your neck throwing the whole system off
The good news? It doesn’t automatically mean permanent damage. Most people see real improvement once the right cause is identified and targeted treatment kicks in. 🧠💜
Understanding why it’s happening is the first (and most important) step toward quieting things down.
Swipe through to learn the common drivers of post-concussion tinnitus and what actually helps.
