This week, the President renamed Lake Ontario for U.S. federal use.

Up here? It’s still Lake Ontario. 🇨🇦
Today, tomorrow and always.

But something much more important is happening on both sides of that border.

🇺🇸 In the U.S., Meta has agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle claims involving the effects of Facebook and Instagram on children, including allegations about features encouraging compulsive use.

Same developing reward systems.

And the same question:

Why are some children more vulnerable than others?

My scientific partner, Dr. Kenneth Blum, Ph.D., and colleagues recently addressed this larger issue through the science of Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS).

Because the app isn’t the whole story.

Digital dopamine may be the hook.
Vulnerability is what’s underneath. 🧠🧬

Genetics. Epigenetics. Environment. Early exposure. A developing reward system.

If we only fight the latest addiction or substance or behaviour without understanding the child underneath it, we may be missing an opportunity to intervene earlier.

That is where I believe Dr. Blum’s science and my work meet — building a bridge from the science of vulnerability to education, prevention and recovery.

This isn’t Canada against the U.S.

Addiction does not discriminate.
Vulnerability doesn’t stop at a border.
And neither should prevention.

This week the President renamed Lake Ontario. Papers filed. Effective immediately, he said.

Cute. Up here, it's still Lake Ontario. Today, tomorrow, and always. You can put whatever you want on an American map. Doesn't change what the water's called on this side of the border, eh.

Meanwhile my scientific partner Dr. Kenneth Blum published a piece in the Washington Examiner asking the question nobody in Washington wants to ask: what if we've been treating addiction all wrong?

Meta just agreed to pay up to $18 billion for building apps that hook kids the same way a drug does. No pill. No needle. Just a notification, a scroll, a hit of dopamine, over and over, until a developing brain can't tell the difference between connection and compulsion.

And the headlines that week were about a lake's new name.

Here in Canada, we're not waiting on Washington to figure this out. Ontario school boards sued Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok, and a judge refused to throw the case out. It's heading to trial. Our educators are fighting this in a courtroom while the President is fighting over what to call a body of water he doesn't even get the final say on.

I sat with that for a long time. We can rename a lake in an afternoon, or at least try to. But we still can't get federal policy, either side of the border, to admit that addiction was never really about the substance or the app or the object. It's about the vulnerability underneath.

Dr. Blum has spent his career proving this. Reward Deficiency Syndrome. The reason someone can walk away from one addiction and land straight in another. The reason a kid pulled off Instagram just finds the next hit somewhere else, if nobody ever treats what's actually happening in that brain.

29 years into my own recovery, this is the fight I know in my body, not just my head.

You can call a lake whatever you want. Names don't matter to me nearly as much as what we're actually doing.

Meanwhile my scientific partner, and worlds leading Neuroscientist-Dr. Kenneth Blum, published a piece asking why we still cannot name the real thing that is stealing our children's brains.
