Obituary for Ronald Wayne Cottrell
December 6, 1947 ~ September 28, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, friend, and long time resident of Berwyn, Ronald Wayne Cottrell on September 28, 2026 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Ron "Sr" was born to Percival and Olive Cottrell in the Berwyn Hospital on December 6, 1947. 3rd oldest out of 4 children. Charles (Douglas), Margaret (Margie) and Barbara.
Ron grew up with a strong passion for family, friends, community and the outdoors. On October 7th, 1972, he married the love of his life, Brenda Cottrell (nee Sharp) where on February 26th, 1973, they welcomed their first out of 4 children, Ronald Douglas (Jr.), followed by Gregory John on March 10, 1977, and twins Lindsay Margaret and Brandon James on September 23, 1983. His wife and children were his passion, along with the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golf and camping. Ron also had a love for old cars, especially his 2 old Chevrolet Chevelles. Eventually all 3 sons would create their own little families, creating 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. They quickly consumed very large parts of his heart as well, an unconditional love he shared through time spent at family gatherings, or going to watch his grandchildren play sports. He was always ours and his grandchildrens biggest supporters.
Ron worked several jobs over the years, from a parts man at Shaw Motors in Berwyn, where he completed his schooling, graduating as top student in the province. He also worked for GSI Seismic, Alberta Wheat Pool and the Government of Alberta as a gravel checker, to eventually running Berwyn Bigway Groceries with his wife Brenda for over 38 years.
Ron's passion for his community seen him join the volunteer fire department as a volunteer fire fighter. He was a member of Berwyn Legion, and a member of the Berwyn Elks for 27 years. Up until later in 2025 he was a member of citizens on patrol, doing late night patrols trying to keep the community he loved so dearly safe.
Ron's passion for the outdoors poured over into his sons after growing up and taking them hunting with their Uncle Chuck (Margie), and brother Doug who was dads best hunting partners outside of his children. Many adventures in the woods were had over the years between Ron and Chuck, where so many great stories were able to be shared and admired.
Ron was pre-deceased by his father Percival, his mother Olive, his brother Douglas (Charles) and his wife Marguerite, as well as best friend and hunting partner his brother in-law Chuck.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 54 years Brenda, his children Ron (Angie), Greg (Amanda), Brandon (Leanne) and Lindsay, as well as 6 grandchildren. Chevy, Alayna (Austin), Tayler, Rylyn, Makena and Charlie, and great grandson Cohen. Ron is also survived by his sister Margie, and his younger sister Barbara (Terry) as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family.
A Celebration of Ron's Life will be held at the Berwyn Elks Community Center on Friday October 23, 2026 at 2:00 pm. Snacks and beverages to follow at the Elks Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks if any one would like to make a contribution, funds will be collected to donate to the Berwyn Municipal Library for his love of community or to Canadian Tire Jumpstart for his love of youth sports and outdoors.
