In our last post, we introduced the concept of radical acceptance and its benefits, but how can you practice implementing this approach in your daily life?
Suffering typically arises from not accepting pain. When reality is painful, it is natural to try and push it down or fight against it. However, these strategies only provide temporary relief and are not helpful in the long run. A more sustainable response is to accept the situation as is, i.e., adopt a radical acceptance approach. But, like many other skills, radical acceptance requires practice and can appear challenging to master.
To help you get started, here are 7 steps you can take to develop radical acceptance skills (Taitz, 2021):
✨Acknowledge the present: Be mindful of your circumstances and face the objective reality of how things are.
✨Evaluate your level of control: Ask yourself whether you can control or change the situation. If you cannot control the outcome, it may not be worth getting upset over. It can be painful to acknowledge that you are not always in control, but it can also be freeing.
✨Let go of judgment: Instead of forming judgments and labels about events, focus on being present in the moment and observing things as they are.
✨Leave the past behind: Remind yourself that the past cannot be changed and ruminating will not fix what was, only take away from the now.
✨Breathe: Whenever you are fighting reality, you may tense up at the shoulders, face, or stomach. Take a few deep breaths and focus on the air flowing in and out of your body. By observing your breath, you can ground yourself in the present moment and become more relaxed.
✨Be intentional and patient: Choose to practice radical acceptance daily and understand that it takes time to master.
✨Practice: Practice saying mantras or using coping mechanisms to help you get through challenging moments. Learn to accept suboptimal situations so that when bigger challenges arise, applying this skill will already be familiar.
