Two weeks in, saw nothing, tossed it? You didn't fail. You just didn't give it a fair trial.

Here's what nobody tells you when you start something new. Your skin renews its surface cells on roughly a 28-day cycle, and that cycle stretches longer as you get older. So a fresh routine is essentially talking to skin that won't fully turn over for about a month. The first couple of weeks aren't the verdict. They're barely the introduction. That's why so many products get abandoned right before they'd have started to show. The change is happening underneath, in cells that haven't reached the surface yet.

The fix is simple: give it a full cycle before you judge it. And if you're not sure what's even worth committing to, that's where a proper skin assessment saves you time and money. We'll look at your skin, your goals, and build a routine you can actually measure, so you're never guessing again.

Summer in the Okanagan leaves skin dull, congested, and holding tension. This August, three ways to reset it, plus a new option worth knowing.

Three of our most-requested facials are $50 off all month: the Bela MD multi-step treatment, dermaplaning for instant smoothness, and microdermabrasion to brighten. Each is about an hour, no downtime. Prefer skilled hands over machines? Facial sculpting is $50 off too, with sculpting massage, cupping, and gua sha drainage. Add a HydroJelly Mask or Microcurrent for $20. Offer ends August 31.

Also new to Canada: HArmonyCa by Allergan Aesthetics, a hybrid injectable that lifts now and supports your own collagen over time. This month we are explaining how it works, not rushing you into it. Prescription treatment, suitability decided at an MD-led consultation. Individual results vary.

The "base tan" myth has been around for decades: the belief that building up a little colour before a holiday somehow prepares the skin and protects it.

The reality is far less appealing. There is no such thing as a safe base tan. Any change in skin colour, whether from the sun or a tanning bed, is a sign that the skin has already been damaged. A base tan offers virtually no meaningful protection against future sun exposure, while the process of building one carries real risk.

The numbers from Melanoma Canada are striking. Using a tanning bed before the age of 35 has been shown to increase the risk of developing melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, by 59 to 75 per cent. That is a significant trade for a tan that does little to protect you in the first place. The good news is that this risk is highly modifiable.

Choosing broad-spectrum SPF, protective clothing, and shade over artificial tanning is one of the most effective ways to look after your long-term skin health. If you have concerns about existing sun damage or want guidance on protecting your skin, a consultation is a sensible place to start.

Your skin’s needs change with the seasons, and summer is often when heavy skincare routines stop working the way they used to.

Increased heat, humidity, sweat, sunscreen use, and oil production can leave skin feeling congested, oily, dull, or unbalanced when products are too rich or layered too heavily. Adjusting your skincare routine for summer can help support clearer-looking skin, balanced hydration, improved texture, and overall skin health.

Strategic summer skincare is usually less about adding more products and more about choosing lighter hydration, antioxidant protection, barrier support, and daily SPF that work with your skin instead of overwhelming it. At South Okanagan Laser & Skin Centre in Penticton, skincare recommendations and treatment plans are customized based on your skin type, seasonal concerns, lifestyle, and long-term skin health goals to help maintain balanced, healthy-looking skin year-round.

The three biggest sunscreen myths we hear in clinic all the time?

1. “Darker skin doesn’t need SPF.”
While melanin does provide some natural UV protection, it does not fully prevent sun damage, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, or skin cancer risk. Every skin tone benefits from daily sunscreen use.

2. “If I’m not burning, my skin is fine.”
UV damage can still contribute to collagen breakdown, pigmentation concerns, and cumulative skin damage long before a visible burn appears.

3. “Higher SPF means I only need to apply it once.”
Even high-SPF formulas need to be reapplied regularly, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure, sweating, or swimming.

Daily SPF use is one of the most important parts of maintaining long-term skin health. Consistency matters just as much as choosing the right formula.

Not sure which sunscreen is best for your skin type, lifestyle, or concerns? Our team can help you find an SPF that works for your routine and feels comfortable enough to wear every day.

Working with Gen Z keeps us on our toes. We held up two fingers to send someone to room 2, and they thought we were just being friendly. Different interpretations, same confidence.

Fortunately, we figured it out and made it to the right treatment room in the end.

The connection between sun exposure and skin cancer is among the most thoroughly studied relationships in dermatology, and the numbers are difficult to ignore.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the overwhelming majority of nonmelanoma skin cancers, and the large majority of melanomas, are associated with ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Over time, UV exposure damages the DNA within skin cells, and that accumulated damage is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for skin cancer. In other words, it's a risk you can actively work to reduce. Prevention comes down to consistency.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF, protective clothing, seeking shade during peak UV hours, and routine skin checks can all help lower cumulative exposure and support long-term skin health. UV rays reach the skin year-round, including on overcast days, which is why protective habits matter far more than any single product.

Pool water often makes acne look better at first, but that improvement is temporary and mostly due to how chlorine affects the skin.

Chlorine strips moisture from the surface, which makes breakouts look flatter and less noticeable right after swimming. That dryness is not healing the acne. It is simply dehydrating the top layer of skin. When the skin dries out, it responds by producing more oil to compensate. That rebound in oil flow can lead to new congestion, especially in areas already prone to breakouts.

Chlorinated water can also disrupt the skin barrier, which makes the skin more reactive, more irritated, and slower to heal after acne flares. If your skin feels tight, itchy, or slightly stingy after the pool, that is your barrier responding to irritation, not your acne improving.

A quick rinse, gentle cleansing, and restoring hydration after swimming help prevent the cycle of surface‑drying followed by increased oil production.

Summer is the season for a lot of things.
Lake days.
Beach weekends.
Last-minute road trips.
A solid SPF routine.
IPL and laser treatments over freshly tanned skin? Not one of them.

Laser technology works by detecting pigment within the skin. When skin is tanned from sun exposure, self-tanner, or spray tans, there’s more pigment present, causing the skin to absorb more heat during treatment. This increases the risk of irritation, burns, hyperpigmentation, and uneven results. At South Okanagan Laser & Skin Centre, treatment timing is always planned with skin health and safety first. Allowing your skin to return to its natural baseline helps ensure safer treatments and more consistent outcomes.

The good news? There are still plenty of summer-safe treatments available to help maintain skin health, glow, and overall skin quality throughout the season.
